Engadget's summary of the differences between the newest model and iPad 2:
http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/07/new-ipad-vs-ipad-2/

It seems that the new iPad is focused on graphics/gaming and is unlikely to deliver performance benefits over the now-older iPad 2 for those of us who want to use an iPad for making music/sound art.

I guess the most relevant news for most musicians is that the iPad 2 was just dropped $100 in price. The 16GB iPad 2 now starts at $399 instead of $499.

hmm

I suppose the new display will look great but I never looked at my ipad2 and thought 'I wish it had a higher resolution screen'.

Seems the extra grunt in the new processor is strictly for driving the insane number of pixels on the new display. Together they make an almost double capacity battery last about the same time as the iPad2.

What I have wished for on the iPad2 is

  1. applications could use more than one stereo output at the same time.
  2. it wasn't so heavy.
  3. an infrared tx/rx so I can control my television.

I'm predicting that this will prove to be an IQ test of sorts on ebay in the coming months. Laughing

My take is the same as yours,Gov.Most of the improvements seem to be display oriented.(and camera and 4G) My only reservation is this:
Will the iPad 2 become unable to run one of the future versions of the OS sooner than the new one? While there doesn't appear to be a technical reason for this I wonder if Apple might have done something in terms of planned obsolescence to make you buy a new one sooner.
(I actually am considering getting a 2nd one,but I'm thinking of one of the original ones (refurb or used) pretty much only to use with air display as a 2nd monitor for the laptop when away from home)

The iPad 1 has the same architecture as the iPhone 4, and the 3GS is still sold in the Apple Store. I really do't think you have much to worry about. Smile

You're probably right, but I can no longer underestimate Apple's ability to be toadies and break things on purpose. Sad

Either way,if I DO get a second one,it probably will be a 2 rather than a "new" (unless it's a "1" for the aforementioned reasons)
My tired old peepers can't see all those extra pixels anyways. Wink

The new iPad has a faster processor and more ram, not to mention major graphical boosts... I'm sure all of these things can help musical applications.

The new A5X has exactly the same processor speed and number of cores as the A5 in the iPad2. It has a 'quad core gpu' but all that extra grunt would be used up just pushing out 4x the pixels. Even if they save some clock cycles by not whole display anti-aliasing anymore, that wouldn't make the main core go any faster at all.

Current silicon limits will keep the processors from getting much faster, without sacrificing their battery prowess. I'd expect 4x processors in the next revision, but the 2 cores in the iPad/iPhone aren't anywhere near capacity aside from crazy gamer platform apps. It would only be pandering to marketing hype if there where more cores now. And battery life probably won out in this case.
