Yes, probably mostly due to mobile safari not being fully gpu accelerated. Still makes it clear that you should not expect improved performance from the new hardware.

I would agree... at this time.

iOS is supposedly a subset of Mac OSX, which has given developers the ability to exploit GPUs for both graphics performance and general computing performance, since the release of Snow Leopard.

It's only a matter of time before app developers start to make use of the new iPad's higher number of GPUs for better general (non-graphics) computing performance. Though of course I wouldn't base an iPad buying decision on that alone.
