Looking for a free general purpose soft synth and/or sample player, to run under windows XP. Any recommendations?

Hi Greg!

There are quite a few free soft synths in VSTi format out there. Right off the top of my head there is Synth1 and Crystal. One link to Synth1 is here:
http://sonictransfer.com/synth1-free-vst-synthesizer.shtml
The Synth1 page itself is in Japanese I believe. There is also alot of patches available for it.

Crystal can be found here:

Also a lot of free patches available.

Native Instruments has their Kontakt Player and Reaktor Player sampler and synth. They're designed to play their sound packs and possibly others. I'm not a sampler guy, so I don't know what the free sampler market is like. One site you should check out is www.kvraudio.com. They have a database of freeware, shareware, and commercial softsynths. Be aware that some of the VSTi require some sort of host to play them back....fror example Reaper, Sonar, Energy, Bidule, etc... There is also two programs - VST Host and Savi Host that allow you to set them up as stand alone synths. You can find them here.
