Experimental Percussion Subject description: Clangs etc |
|
|
Hi,
I'm new to the forum, and fairly new to modular synthesis but I thought I'd sign up here to post my questions; it seems like a really helpful forum!
I'd like to create a patch which generates seemingly random percussive sounds. I'm not interested in things like snares and cowbells, but much more experimental and even abrasive hits. Anything from fm sounding percussion to blips and beeps and everything in between.
I'd like to figure out how to make this patch cycle and generate new sounds without me having to trigger it manually or use a sequencer, so it would automatically run, but one hit could be wildly different to the next.
At the moment I have an extremely basic set of modules from Analogue Systems, 2 x vco, Synthi filter and EG, mixer and ring mod. I'm thinking about ordering their noise, clock and S&H module, I think that outputting some random cvs could be useful in my goal.
Do you guys have any patch ideas or recommendations? Even recommendations for modules which I should take a look at. I'm sure I'll need to acquire more gear to accomplish this but I'm not entirely sure where to look. Currently I only have a grasp of the very basics.
Thanks in advance for any help! |

I would start with crosspatching to get some real weird noises (VCO1 output to VCO2 CV in, and VCO2 output to VCO1 CV in), works even better in a ring with 3 VCOs.
A S&H is going to help get you random CVs out of this, which can then be send back to the VCOs.
Do you have a VCA? _________________ Weblog! |

I patch white noise>LPG......Then S & H into the cv at slow speed, patched to the LPG. I use a MN Wogglebug for this. Another great one for modulating is the Morphing Terrarium set in medium/or low modes patched to the LPG.
Also mixing Noise with sine waves. LPG works great too!
Hope that helps a little |

I would like to add with the Makenoise/Wiard Wogglebug, the Malekko/Wiard Noisering. I use these modules "ALL THE TIME" for noisy, experimental sounding rhythm patterns. Don't forget that mixing these type sounds with FM'ed VCO's is pure magic! Patching this group into a LPG (Borg).....Then onward to a Makenoise Phonogene.. Then modulate that with LFO's |

As for the sequencing of such - see the Lunetta thread in DIY. Shift registers, counters, dividers and such patched together can generate some strange, evolving patterns.
