When mixing the bass and snare on a song what do you think works best in your opinions. for example what frquencys do you enhance or takeaway and what you use in compressor inserts etc.

I always find mine lack somthing. Theyre missing bass or the snare isnt bitey enough.

Its subjective, all depends on the sounds you are using.
use an analyzer to see where your fundamental frequencies of each sound your mixing lies. Make suer each sound takes its own space, generally kicks & bass will occupy 30Hz- 150/200Hz, snares will takes up the next area 100-4k dependant on your sound, hats take 2-300-8 or 9k

Just use your ears as to what sounds best.

Compressor settings vary, threshold & ratio, prob only use 2:1 to 4:1 ratio, Attack & release are your key controls, ie, for a punchy kick, you want the transient sound to come through (the initial thwack) and compress the body of the sound so you would use a medium to slow attack & fast release.

just play around with controls and listen to what they do to a sound and experiment before you do mixes. Always compare/bypass the insert to see if you have made improvements.

Trust your ears.
