questions about memory-use and polyphony |
|
|
I know I'm getting irritating, by keeping asking questions, but I still don't really understand the memory thing. I love making my own sounds, what is why I bought the G2 Engine for in the first place.
I've made a very heavy patch which gives the following memory information:
patch load
cycles: 70.6 memory: 49.2
polyphony information reads as follows:
voice mode 4 (4)
I suppose the number between brackets is the number of voices I want and the first number is the number of voices I can get?
The number between brackets can kept being raised, but the first number not.
I've also made a sound with a patch load wich is much smaller, something like:
patch load
cycles: 34 memory 31
but the polyphony can't come over
voice mode: 2 (-)
The number between brackets can be raised, but the first number not. |

correct - due to the resources used in the first patch, you won't get more than four voices out of it. you can request more than is available though, as you've seen.
EDIT: yes, as Zynthetix pointed out, sometimes a patch will have less poly than you'd think due to other slots hogging resources in a performance. the number of voices in the other slots would have to be lowered to make up for this.
were you using other slots in the second example? _________________ SoundCloud Last edited by Unfed on Wed Mar 09, 2005 4:17 pm; edited 2 times in total |

since you can load voices in the four slots A-D, the polyphony of the G2 has to be shared across those slots and their respective patches. If you have a small patch, selected by itself, all other slots inactive, you will get higher polyphony. If that same patch is selected AND other slots are selected (each containing their own patches) the polyphony will drop on each of them to the maximum number that the G2 can provide. |

The NM Classic manual ( http://www.clavia.se/nordmodular/Files/NM3_0Ed2Manual.pdf ) has an appendix called "voice definition" which explains patches, voices, slots, dsps, allocation and how these relate to each other.
Things work a bit different for the G2 but it's a better intro into these matters than the G2 manual gives..
