I just got a Fostex R8 reel to reel recorder and after many hours of research I've found the easiest and cheapest way to sync it to mac recording software so I thought I'd share.
This will work for syncing any multitrack tape recorder.

1- download a 5min smpte wav file from here..
http://trevor.ucsd.edu/soundscape.html
..and record it to one of your tracks.

2- download and install smpte reader..
http://nobusiness-soft.com/smptereader
This converts the smpte code to mtc.

3- set up a virtual midi port in audio midi setup and route the smpte reader output to that port.

4- plug the output of your recorded smpte track to an audio input of your computer.

5- open your recording software and set it to MTC sync listening to the virtual port.

Thats it! Now when you play the tape recorder the software should follow along.
I've done this with Logic Pro 9 and Pro Tools HD 9 without any hitches and the timing seems very tight.

Also, if anyone has a source for an audio smpte time code sample that's longer than 5mins please post it here.
Thanks.
