iOS 6.1 Subject description: Big step back for web audio |
|

I upgraded my ipad2 to iOS 6.1 hoping for improvements with the safari web audio api. Unfortunately most of what was working now seems broken. |

? What doesn't seem to be working? I updated mine earlier today but have only listened to Youtube (some clips about TONTO and Tonto's Expanding Head Band) and Pandora. Both seemed ok..... _________________ Dave

iOS 6 could create in browser oscillator, filter etc objects to do synthesis directly from JavaScript. Not working in 6.1. Basic embedded audio and video still work fine. |

Ah, ok. I don't use it for that....
Sorry to hear about the problems. Have you found anyone else complaining to Apple about it? _________________ Dave

No, it is sort of bleeding edge I guess. What they had working was about 80% of what works in chrome but the whole api has a long way to go. Needs a higher resolution timing system than what JavaScript supplies. Midi in would be nice but I think that is planned in another api (along with audio in). |

Browser audio processing has been a 'promise' for a long time now ... I do think it to be a great idea still ... also as a form of data compression ... just send a model and let the client recreate the audio from that. _________________ Jan

Stumbled on the problem/solution if anyone is interested.
webkitAudiocontext iOS6.1
Seems that from iOS 6.1, mobile Safari is enforcing the "no audio without user initiation" policy. That means that a noteOn specifically won't work from an onLoad or similar. I have added a vco1.osc.noteOn(0) to the scope sync mode click event and things are working as with iOS 6.0. Just the one command was sufficient to get all three oscillators going. So on the iPad, touch the scope screen once to get the audio happening.
Seems non of the other short comings of the Safari vs Chrome have been addressed yet.
Updated link that works on iOS6.1+ |
