Nevermind.

I decided against using a PC sequencer. I only really wanted super-accurate initial grooves to layer hand-played tracks on. I found another solution. My Boss BR-600 recorder has a rhythm editor and you can upload your own sounds to it. It's as simple a sequencer as I wanted. I had it all the time and just hadn't figured it out yet.

(I've been avoiding the use of sequencing in favor of hand-played music. But my tunes that are based on automated percussion or melodic lines sound much more solid than many of my all-hand-played tunes.)

Update October 2013:

I found an even better solution. I got a Korg Microsampler which has a quantize feature. This allows me to improvise new hand-played first lines and automatically correct them to rhythmic perfection. I can either sample sounds into the MS or play the MS sequence on another synth via MIDI.
