Subject description: 15V -> 12V for Euro?
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

So I have a couple projects coming along that will be Euro based rather than my standard MOTM/5U 15V.

I have plans to put a +/- 12V supply in my rack for this purpose, but for bench use I'm wondering if I can get away with an "adapter"--namely, plug in my +/-15V & 5V supply on one side, and get +/- 12V & 5V out the other side on an appropriate Euro IDC jack.

It seems straightforward enough to run some caps and two 12V regulators off the 15V supply, and pass through the 5V (with a cap of course).

I never have more than one module connected to my bench supply at a time, and usually the only other thing I have connected simultaneously is my V/Oct calibrator.

Any reasons I'm missing that this would be a bad idea?

It looks fine. Very Happy
I don't see the need of to use more capacitors than the ones needed by the regulators, though.

I've made a few of these little 15v>12v adaptor cards - just using regulators and caps. They work fine. Just make sure you get the right -v regulators in addition to the +v ones, and then use the circuit in the regulator docs.

^ What they said.

Worth remebering that LM79xx need a minimum load to work properly. An LED + current-limiting resistor does the trick. Stick one on the +rail too, and get a power on monitor for free. Smile

cheers,
Dave
