Yamaha SU700 |

I also have an interest in a Yamaha SU700 - I know these units are dated but I think I prefer limits now after working my way through a hell of a lot of gear over the past 18-months.
I know there are things to look out for (SCSI port and additional outputs) but does anyone have any experience with these units and care to share any ideas?
Are they glorified sample players or can one get some really funky results?
I'm looking for a groovebox style sampler for noodling ideas and am very flexible with sequencing though the more options ITB the better _________________ Crumar Bit 01, Roland SH32, 12u/104hp modular (90% DIY).

I had one of these many moons ago. i'm commenting here because i feel like picking one up for the same reasons - limits.
From what I can remember I thought it was a great jamming box. Very easy to sample into and get something going quickly and the FX sound excellent. There are 8 scene buttons that allow you to sketch out a basic track by muting/unmuting parts, setting levels and fx and then setting up the scenes into a sequence. You can also trigger scenes live for on the fly changes to a simple pattern.
Aside from that i remember the unit was a joy to use. Nearly every function is laid out bare in front of you. I have yet to see any other sampling/sequencing box with so many knobs and great fx. I had a Korg ESX but I didn't like the sound and found it limiting. The SU700 is not perfect but if you're after a minimal approach, good sound and ease of operation then this box delivers. I used to enjoy trying to make whole tracks using one floppy disc...tough but definitely creative! |
