Power supply decoupling? Subject description: Decoupling multiple modules on a single PCB |
|
|
Each of the YuSynth modules have electrolytic decoupling caps on the power supply input, I get this. However, I want to combine several modules on to one board and can't quite wrap my head around how I should handle the power supply decoupling.
Would it be appropriate to just have one set of decoupling caps at the power input to the board, or should I still maintain the individual power decoupling for each module? _________________ My synth build blog: http://gndsynth.blogspot.com/ |

Keep it separately for each module on the module's board. These are like little reservoirs of power for each module, if you combine them, or re-locate them, the contamination of one module's earth from the others only goes up, not a good thing. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

Thanks, that's exactly what I was thinking as well, but wasn't sure if that was really an issue or if the decoupling was there just to deal with connector resistance.
Which then leads me to the question if I have the PS decoupling at each module, do I need additional decoupling at the boards PS connector or should I just go straight from the board connector to each modules PS branch? _________________ My synth build blog: http://gndsynth.blogspot.com/ |

I'm not really sure what you're asking.
Each module has it's own decoupling caps on the board yeah?
End of story. I think,.....
But maybe I'm not seeing it the way you are. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

See the two attachments. Wondering if the 2 caps at the power connector in blaha are necessary or is blahb the way to go?
Though at this point I think I'm going to put a 7XL15 pair on each board which makes the question moot.

Yeah, go with blahb.
Look at it like a lowpass filter. (ie, the series resistance of the wires comes first, then you hit the caps, which are right next to, (preferably on) the module boards) _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |
