Hail - cult of lunetta! Smile

Here I will be posting updates on my lunetta modular, which I chose to call Aristoteles, danish name for the ancient greek Aristotle who founded the logic statements as we know them today. The synth is also using CMOS logic to determine the states of the outputs.

It's all described on my blog www.dogenigt.com which I will be linking to. It contains all the documents from the building process, along with videos and schematics.

Schematics:
http://data.xn--dgenigt-q1a.dk/Elektronografi/Aristoteles%20Logic%20Synth/schematics/

Posted Image, might have been reduced in size. Click Image to view fullscreen.

The modules will be (in order from top left and down) the following:

- 8 x 40106 oscillators with PWM control and inputs to the freq pots, i.e. for vactrol (DONE)
- 4040-divider with 12-step rotary switch. (DONE)
- 4040-divider with 12-step rotary switch + output for each of the 12 stages.
- 4017-based 10-step counter with output for each step and reset input. (DONE)
- 8 logic gates: 6 x 4081 AND-gates, 1 x 4093 NAND-gate and 1 x 4070 XOR. (DONE)
- 4046 PLL "glissandi gen" module with HI and LO pots + outputs from some of the pins.
- CMOS "rungler" with 4021 shift reg and 4046 internal osc with external clock.
- 4049 "distortion" module with white noise acting as random clock gen.
- 4049 "distotrtion" module gaining external input to clock.
- 8 channel mixer with sallen-key filter and volume for each channel. (DONE)
- Main volume + mono output module. (DONE)
- Power module with starve pot and starve button. (DONE)

Update #5: Step Sequencer. - 27th of January, 2015

Very cool! I've actually been planning on doing the exact same thing, inspired by the dlb electronics site. Make a site documenting a modular as I go along.

Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to connect to your site... I'm in China. Don't know if the host you are using is blocked here.

nice choice of name!

still busy learning and building smaller, standalone devices but surely planning to start a modular sometimes. so your blog is very helpful! thanks!

Glad you could use it - I am updating the original post with the planned modules so you know what's coming up Cool

looks sick. Cool idea using the 4049 as a random clock.

Yeah, that's one of the coolest modules if you ask me. I can't wait to combine it with the AND-gates letting through the oscillators or clocking the 4017 with it.

Here's a recording of the noise/random clock driving a 4046 PLL:

Great sounds. And those are all cool ideas. I bet you could use it as data in on a shift register and then use an osc to clock the "speed" of the noise.

A module with multiple random outs at both different and the same clock divisions would be super useful, I think.

Wow! Lots of updates to your Logic Synth since I checked your site last time.

I think I found all updates, but missed the one describing the 4049 random clock. Can you share that one too?

I haven't finished this module on stripboard yet, only on testboard but I've done a schematic for it you can take a look at.

At the top of this topic, in the first post, you can see all the planned modules and the ones I've done has DONE written next to them Smile

Thanks for stopping by!

nice thing! i like it.

(... in your shematic you shorted all the outputs of the 4069 and 40106 to Ground ? )

Thank you! Grounding the unused pins is done to prevent noise from floating in/outputs and can also reduce power consumation (so I was told) Wink

You should ground inputs, but not outputs!

Ah! Makes sense with the schmitt trigger, if the input is pulled down or set to low. But in the case of the 4069/4049 I think I read somewhere that unused op amps should be shorted to be disabled... right? scratch

Nice to have it clarified - specially before I go to work with this circuit! Maybe I should post all my beta schemes to have your feedback.

Unused opamps are often configured as voltage followers and then grounded. But the 4069/4049 aren't opamps,
although the 4069UB can be (ab)used to behave like one. Shorting outputs is something you want to avoid with these chips,
which is also why you can't just connect outputs together. (with the exception of connecting gates parallel for a larger output current)

You shouldn't ground an unused op-amp either! Shocked Generally you configure it as a voltage follower, but connect the output *only* to the inverting input. That way the op-amp neither sinks or sources any current. (well, almost none)

Also, PHOBoS is correct that using an inverter as an amplifier is just making it behave sort of like an op-amp. It's not an op-amp at all.
