Hi all-
I've read through the "panning with the 2164" SDIY threads and bugged my friend a fair bit - but I'm still having a little trouble getting this IC to do what I'm looking for.. maybe someone has some advice.

I'm trying to build a panner based on the much-discussed Irwin/Gallo circuit found here:
http://www.sdiy.org/philgallo/mgbvca.html

Following this schematic, I've established two sets of linear VCAs.

I'm sending the "Right" C.V. Op Amp an inverted voltage and I'm sending the "Left" C.V. op amp an inversion of that inverted voltage...and I have a pretty severe dead spot in the middle.

I know that with a linear slope, there will be attenuation - but this seems to be closer to a complete fade out of one signal followed by the subsequent fade in of the other, so I'm suspecting I got something wrong here..

I could see a way to do it using two full-wave rectifiers, but I'd have to chop off the gain (since I believe 0v is "unity" on a 2164 and the gain comes from the negative excursion) - but I'd like to see if there is a more straight-forward way of doing this..

Panning is more than just crossfading.

I couldn't explain very well, but Yves Ulsson has a VC Panner circuit on his site that may be helpful.

Right - I'm hoping to pan, sorry if I didn't make that clear. The Ulsson circuit uses 13700s, which allows the inverting/non-inverting C.V. possible without too much tampering. I was hoping to use the V2164, just to get more familiar with it - but it requires a very specific voltage range.
