Hi everyone, I'm a creator of original electronic music and sometime instrumentalist. I'm here to find like-minded people and share my work, as well as to hear other people's work and give feedback. I have an eclectic range of musical interests, from classical to trance, taking in new age and middle eastern music along the way.
I tend to pay more attention to specific pieces of music that appeal to me than particular groups and artists, so it is easier for me to name individual pieces that influence me, but among the groups and artists who have produced music that particularly appeals, I would like to name Massive Attack, Delerium, Dash Berlin, Bjork, Enigma, and Enya.
As a musician, I started out playing piano, had lessons for several years when I was young, and achieved a reasonable standard before losing interest and the will to practice enough to move on to the next level. I played saxophone in the school band where I was first chair (I can still remember how, but I'm not sure my mouth will obey any more!) but although I again achieved a decent standard, I was never very motivated, and spent a lot of time wishing I had taken up a more "female" instrument like cello or viola instead, which would also have allowed me to play in the orchestra rather than the band.
My favourite pieces to perform when I was playing regularly were probably Für Elise (the proper version) and the sax arrangement of "Stardust". I tried guitar but never got past the beginner's pain (ouch! my poor fingers!) and can generally fake it on the simpler wind instruments. These days though, I'm more interested in playing keyboard synth (I am currently feeling the lack of a suitable midi controller for my computer, which makes composition much slower!) and singing vocals for my own music, though I am afflicted by the nagging worry that my voice sounds like a 12 year old's and that no-one will want to hear it.
I compose most of my music using FL Studio, which I find quite effective for my own needs. I've tried some of the other DAWs such as Cubase and Pro Tools in the past, and not got along so well with them. (Are there other people who prefer FL studio on here? SOMEONE else must use it, surely!) I'm not always sure what genres to place my own compositions in (perhaps someone else who is more knowledgeable about genres could help me with this!) but in general they can be called electronic, often with dance, new age, and world influences.
I've lately returned to composing music after a hiatus of several years, and am more interested in promoting my work nowadays than I used to be (it was really just a personal hobby before), as well as working with vocals and producing it to a more "professional" standard. Any tips or feedback that people have for these things will therefore be much appreciated!
