Hello everyone. A little about me.

My name is Jim Johnson; I'm a music software developer and synthesist.

I've been playing synthesizers for most of my life, since I was about 15, but have never been a keyboardist. For the past 20 years or so I've been writing music software, most notably Dr. T's Algorithmic Composer (the first commercially available algorithmic composition software) and Techno Toys (including Seq-303, one of Mosc's favorite sequencers). Currently I earn my keep as a member of E-MU Systems' stable of programmers, working on the Emulator X family of software samplers.

My musical output has been less prolific than my software production, but that has been changing lately. I've mostly done live work, especially with small synth-pop bands in the Phoenix, AZ area in the 80's. Over the past 10 years I've been working with modular synths, but using analog modulars live is a little more challenging than I prefer.

So now I'm working with the Nord Modular G2 as my sole instrument, and lovin' it. I've played a few shows here in Eugene, Oregon, and have recorded some of my stuff. This forum will serve as a home for my recorded work.

I have been using the TechnoToys sequencer for a long long time. I am unworthy... This is a very good program; great fun. I never had any warm feelings for the original 303 hardware box, but this Seq-303 is great.

It's great to have you as a member of electro-music.com. An honor actually... Very Happy

Didn't Jan Hammer use this on the Miami Vice soundtracks?

I lived in Boston when Dr.T's was in business and their headquarters were nearby. I visited them and they gave me a bunch of software to learn so when I came back to Italy I was their product specialist for awhile and went to music shows to demonstrate their software. I remember KCS/Omega, Copyist Pro, TigerCub, Tunesmith, DX Heaven and other editors. all for Atari computer. I still have them all somewhere Very Happy I guess by Algorithmic Composer you mean the PVG (programmable variation generator).

No, Algorithmic Composer was a Commodore 64 program, actually a package of three programs, of which I wrote two. I also wrote Tunesmith. I also did the manuals for KCS, Copyist, Tiger, and a lot of the patch editors.

Tunesmith was cool even if its UI was, may I say, unfriendly? Emil Tobenfeld was too much ahead of his time. Dr.T's software was cool. Do you know what happened to him Question

Yah, Tunesmith's UI certainly was wierd. It was an early effort :')

Emile now does videos rather than music. He has a website, http://www.foryourhead.com/.

Emile is an unheralded genius, IMHO. He was the possibly the first to develop music software for MIDI, and certainly the most innovative stuff at the time... way ahead of everyone else. The KCS's MPE (multi-program environment) provided an integrated composition system 20 years before VST!

So "ahead of his time" is an understatement.

If you go to Yahoo Groups, look for an Atari group- it's actually music/midi oriented.

I think I recently saw a post from Emile Himself, or someone calling himself that.

The Sysop of the group can probably fill you in on Emilw, once you join.
