Hey everyone,

Thanks to you guys I finally really got into building synths and my dream of an enormous racket making modular synthesizer is closer than ever!

While I was learning though, I found that it was really hard to understand how and why things worked. Any material I could get my hands on was either far too simple, or it presumed I was already an engineer and was too complex.

I've been hoping to fill that gap, not only for myself, but for as many other people as possible. So I present to you, my (mainly) CMOS modular project. Every module has an accompanying article that explains and analyses the circuit behind the front panel and theres also a perfboard layout and eurorack size drill template for you to build your own! I think I'm going to wait a while till I really plug it. There are a number of modules I need to build and write about before I would consider it ready for public consumption. I wanted to give all of you here a sneak preview as a thanks for all the help this forum has given me.

hey commathe,

i was on that page a few days ago. realy nice looking thing.

maybe you can add some embedded sound excamples ... (soundcloud or so, somthing with a direct playbutton near to the article).

you need a better introduction (not in PDF) to what you doing there. your module artworks look so "eurorack like" Wink just a few words (lofi, cmos, single power supply, 4000, diy and this stuff) - just feed the google database....

maybe you can give some love back ... just one link to the em.....160 forum Wink

maybe also a direct play button for your musik downloads (you can also embbed the bandcap) (looks a bit like the downloadservers a connected via phobos morse code translators)

Thanks for the feedback! Sound samples will come when the website is properly "launched". Right now the set up is a little bit too bare bones to make that many interesting sounds anyway.

Good point about feeding the google machine!

I had a links page until today, but you are right that I should link back to here. I always meant to! Though I haven't needed to quote anyone on this forum yet, I'll be giving credit where it is due whenever I base something of one of your designs.

I don't have the bandwidth to host my music for streaming off the site unfortunately. I also live in China so Bandcamp/Soundcloud are blocked and I can't put my music on there either. Sad

I really appreciate the words of encouragement and constructive feedback. I'll definitely think about rewriting the intro

i just skimmed through a few of your pages and this is AMAZING work!

i'll read up more soon on your site and provide feedback.

I'd put the info from the PDF's online (as html) and make the titles (like "000 – Power Supply and System Overview") clickable aswell,
even if it's just a link to the PDF. looks great sofar thumleft

Very nice, well structured and readable site, commathe. I like the articles, in particular the R-2R article (still working through the math Very Happy ).
I second the idea to make the PDFs available as HTML behind the titles.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Making the names of the module's clickable is so obvious I feel like an idiot for not doing it. I hadn't thought of making web page versions of every article, but I guess that would be more attractive to most people, even though I'm not keen on it because I'm better at using Adobe InDesign than I am at coding HTML!

Probably stating the obvious, but you could try to export the HTML from InDesign. Better than coding it by hand.

Hi Commathe,

You have a nice site with some well done explanations. I especially liked the lucid R-2R explanation.

Just one minor niggle: Did you really mean Steve Lunetta rather than Stanley Lunetta?

Good catch. There are a bunch of small typos that I need to take care of, but I'm not getting as much time as I'd like to put into the site right now.

Just reading the Dual Divider module and I saw this:
Quote:
So why are we using a 7400 series chip in this
module? Because there is no 4000 series equivalent.
The 4000 series does have dividers – check
out the 4020, 4024 & 4040 – but it does not have
any that have two dividers on the same chip. I
like having more than one of the same thing in
a module, especially since you can chain things
like shift registers and dividers together anyway.

Surely the 4520 is the 4000 series equivalent of the 74HC393?

I just now saw your site and it is very impressive. I like the detail you have put into the descriptions and PDFs of the modules, and that it is a 9v system. Good stuff!

Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed I forgot to check 45xx chips. You are right. I will have to remember to update that the next time I push updates to the server.

Also thanks Dr. Offset.

Hopefully, a new module will come in the new year and finish off the first 84HP so I can move on to interesting stuff. I recently moved from China to Scotland though so the move has been hectic and there has been little time to dedicate to the project.

hello commathe,

you'll have made a very nice website with lots of information. Félicitations!

I use your ideas at my start with power supply few months ago. But I have big difficulties with the 4x Square 40106 design perfboard you have put in your PDF. the second half of the chip begin with pin8 to pin14 is incorrect. I trusted your design and I didn't check the 40106 datasheet. I have passed hours to debug your stuff. Now that I've joined this forum I will inform you. I stop following your design but I continue reading the theories. Wink
Please check your pinouts and put new designs I will follow, promise !

PS : nice panels! could you put some pics of your modular please. I will myself too here :

see ya

Yeah, I had some problems in the past with my update of that article not getting passed to the server. I thought that issue had been fixed 4 months ago, but an email a few weeks back let me know it hadn't. I had to go back and check, but that article is correct now

Thanks for the nice words. My modular is still in transit since I moved house, but I want to do one more module and then take a photo of it.
