hmm, although it is becoming one of the biggest things I've built so far it is a bit small for a pipe organ. But a mini pipe organ would be nice,
which got me thinking; could you make one out of a bunch of recorders ?! well, of course I am not the first one with that idea and found this Laughing :

I don't have any dead hamsters, or live ones for that matter, but it could be stored in there, might get a bit smelly over time though

The video is nice (even though I don't understand the non-musical language being used); thanks for posting the link.

In addition, for me it helps explain something--monophony, polyphony, and the new-comer--paraphony. (Perhaps it also explains another concept; let's call it tonophony.)

Normally (and using normal playing techniques), each recorder is capable of playing one note at a time. Therefore it is monophonic. As I understand it, each pipe in a pipe organ is similarly monophonic.

However, each pipe in a pipe organ can play only one note, whereas a recorder (normally) can play different notes. Let's say the recorder is polytonophonic. That is, serially, it can play more than one note, whereas each pipe in a pipe organ is monotonophonic. That is, serially, each pipe can only play one note. (When someone speaks in a "monotone," that person doesn't "inflect"--or change pitch/vocal frequency.)

Because the pipe organ has many different pipes, it can play many different notes simultaneously. Similarly, the recorder organ can play many different notes simultaneously. So, the inventor in the video has converted polytonophonic recorders into monotonophonic recorders.

However, as collections of pipes/recorders capable of playing more than one pipe/recorder at a time, the organs are "sort of" polyphonic, but not quite.

Since each monotonophonic recorder/pipe has no individual expressiveness--i.e., no analog counterpart to VCA+VCF control on a per recorder/pipe basis, the collection (aka organ) is not by contemporary nomenclature "truly" polyphonic. Using contemporary language, however, it can be called "paraphonic."

Of course, in the hands (or rather the mouth) of a human, a normal recorder "sort of" has expressiveness, so a single recorder being played by a single human can be called a polytonophonic monophonic quasiphonic instrument. In the hands of a human, a normal pipe organ has expressive controls globally over collections of pipes (i.e., subsets of all the pipes) and can be called a polytonophonic paraphonic quasiphonic instrument.

Of course, there are also recorder ensembles that could have collective control over the full sound produced by the ensemble with each musician affecting the expressiveness of each individual recorder. Thus, we can say that such an ensemble (as a whole) is indeed polyphonic--but only to the degree each musician can control the analog counterpart to VCA+VCF.

Similarly, a mouth organ can be said to be a polytonophonic paraphonic quasiphonic instrument, and a mouth organ ensemble can be called polyphonic in the same sense that a recorder ensemble can.

Again, nice video; thanks for posting. At last I join the ranks of those who find distinguishing between "paraphony" and "polyphony" useful.

Steve

My bet is on MIDI controlled glockenspiel.

But I'm not betting more than a dollar.

I soldered some more of the electronics so here are some pictures of it. Also finally put the sides on so I have to do more painting.
Which is a rather slow process because I have to wait between layers and I can only do small parts at a time due to space constraints.
And than there is the thing where I have to tape of parts when using a different color and sometimes paint creeps underneath
or it comes off when I remove the tape. Mad (I should probably sand and clean a bit better).

oh and no, it is not going to be a MIDI controlled glockenspiel. Very Happy
