I've been looking into doing the G1 joystick modification, can anyone confirm if it's a 10k Linear Taper Joystick that would be the best bet for this?
Would something like this work?

I'd like a small low profile joystick and the ability to switch from the pots to the joystick depending on what I'm doing, so a joystick-and-switch combo would save some panel drilling.
Anyone done this recently and found a particular joystick they'd care to share the info on? |

One other thing to think of: make sure you know if you want spring return or not! If this is similar to the Sony playstation joysticks, it is spring return. |

I have used these types of thumb sticks before and the spring return can be removed only on a few models without destroying them. The other problem is an OCD problem in that they are designed to be used in a panel or housing that is not a flat surface, but has a bulge where the thumb stick comes through. On flat panels you will have an opening appear on the opposite side of the stick when pushed to the other extreme. This may or may not bother you but is bugged me. one more place for detritus to enter the G1. The switch on them is momentary also so switching to the thumbstick would only happen when pressing down on it, letting go will snap back to the panel pots which may not be what you want.
I started to do this mod and got as far as getting ready to drill the holes. I chickened out and decided to get a CV>MIDI module for my rig and do it over MIDI instead. IIRC the pots in the G1 were 20k linear but it was quite some time ago when I took it apart so I could be wrong. I do remember I had a couple of real joysticks hanging around that had the correct value pots on them.
Another thing to consider is many joysticks and thumb sticks do not use the full span of the pots on them. This is a mechanical problem and to compensate they would have to have special tapered pots and many just don't so consider that in your designs.
It is almost easier to wire up a Vactrol and then you could have CV control in and use any standard modular joystick module. _________________ James Husted, Designer
