Its not that the special effects do not look somewhat convincing in either of these cases...its that the medium used to produce the effects is easily identifiable, hence diminishing the realism.

I honestly think the first star wars movies looked more realistic than these newer ones. (No comment on the scripts.) There was real light hitting real objects (models and muppets). Lord of the Rings had some amazing scenery, and I was suprised to find out that all the shots were places in New Zealand, intricate sets, and extremely large models of buildings and architecture. I think it is cheaper to hire some 3D animators than build a set though, so thats why we see a lot CG.

I agree completely! And I never thought about the impact that actual light played on the models in muppets in the original Star Wars. I knew they looked better than today's, but I couldn't pinpoint what it was about the use of the models that made it better than CG.

It's all about lighting! If you can't master that, the most sophisticated camera or animation application won't help you. In some ways, it's a lot like trying to create "that warm, analog, tape-saturated sound" with plug-ins. It can get close, but it'll never be able to reproduce the real thing.

Speaking of which, has anyone found info on my Walkie Recordalls and the Sonobands they record onto? Actually.....I'll create another thread for that.....

You guys should look into the DVD of "Bad Taste" by Peter Jackson, the DVD has a "making off" that explains how he did all of the speciall effects with the models and so on at no budget at all.

He got to do LOTR because nobody could do it as cheaply as he could. The advantage of Bad Taste is also that it doens´t involve Enia(sp?) and is a lot less pompous but on the other hand, it´s also a little less suitable for romantic dates or family evenings....

Be careful of worlds like "never" and "always", these ablosute terms tend to distract from the impact of what you are saying. I have already heard Rob Hordijk's warm analog tape-saturated sound on the digital systems. It's just a matter of time before CG improves too. Maybe it will be years, but "time waits for no man".

Point well taken. But don't forget society's tendency for all-things-retro and nostalgia. I can't go into a clothing store these days without seeing those 70s/80s printed t-shirts. It seems like things go in cycles, but when there's an outstanding boost in technology in the next decade or so, who knows what will happen?

In the future, people will be nostalgic for the charming DACs in the G2s. Laughing

I´m sure they will be, Mosc. But by then the way people look at DAC´s will have changed. what we now like in tape or old computers is very different from what was liked in them back when they were new.
