Hi all,

I wanted to create a patch that gradually sweeps from a ring mod tone with high harmonic tuning to a ring mod tone with low harmonic tuning, but somehow avoid all inharmonic tones in between that would be caused by osc pitches that fall between harmonics.

This patch sends a bank of oscs tuned to harmonic intervals through the Mux crossfader. The crossfaded harmonics get sent to a ring mod along with another sine osc, for a ring modulated sweeping harmonic effect with no inharmonic tones. Lots of possibilities with this idea.

It may be possible to do it a lot cheaper with a high resonance swept BPF to create the harmonics. Hmm.

Soemthing to note - while constructing the patch, at one point I had 50.8% DSP in the PVA and 24.6% in the CVA, and it still got eight voices (!).

I don't know, but this patch definitely sounds like ring modulation to me, I never heard a filter do that. I like the sound.

About the dsp %es - the 8 voices are to be expected then I'd think, as 50.8 + 24.6 <= 100 - a critical point for the VA (assuming the 24.6 for the FX to be given) would be at 75.4%

I like this patch very much, Dave. It has a ring modulator sound to it, but without the usual non-harmonic overtones. Very interesting.

Do you know that the time constant on the mux crossfader is?

Aha, got it. I was assuming that the voice count would drop to seven if the PVA was greater than 50% and there was anything at all in the CVA.

About using the resonant BPF, I meant send a square wave or something thru a resonant BPF (instead of the bank of sine oscs with MUX) as one input to the ring mod, and still use the same second sine osc as the second RM input. I was thinking that the resonant BPF might do a decent job of generating the series of harmonics that you want to use as one of the RM inputs. Haven't tried it yet.

I did a quick try with the BPF and could not get it to make the same effect (although it cerainly gives interesting results (using the Nord Filter) it tends to give me the more traditional bell like sounds).

I'd like to hear about your experiments Dave.

Attached is an example of the resonant BPF idea.

The square osc is tuned a fifth higher than the sine osc, so the filter picks out harmonics of that fifth to send to the ring mod.

The compressor is needed to even out the level as it transitions between harmonics.

Since the higher harmonics are closer together than the lower harmonics, the harmonic sweep sounded faster as it went through the higher harmonics. To correct this & make the sweep seem more evenly paced, I used a trick with the filter LFO providing pitch mod to itself, with an inverter in the loop. This makes the LFO slow down as it ramps up, flattening and stretching out the top of the LFO triangle wave.

The compressor is a great idea I think !

This is much better than what I did accomplish, but still I like the first patch best :-)

I tried to use partial quantizer, that seems usable as well - see attached.

Nice ideas to play with thanks Dave.
