A little bump here for Reaper. Although it is no longer free, it is 'uncrippled unexpiring shareware' that is fully functional when not paid for, meaning you can try & test as long as you feel is right. Registration for personal use is just 40 dollars, so it isn't expensive (200 USD for commercial use). But finance isn't the main thing I want to address.
The SPEED of development is unbelievable!!! User requests that are reasonable are often implemented within days. Also, a lot of things in Reaper are customizable (looks, default settings, shortcut keys, etc) and while it has many features (VSTi, DXi, Rewire, custom JS plugins, very flexible routing, video sync, midi editor, easy looping, etc etc), it is still a very lean app. The download is just 1.7Mb, and several updates per week are made. In all, the program is just in development for 1 year... did I mention SPEED of development |
Yes I'm going to second Fozzie on this. Reaper is amazing- and could be a direct competitor to Logic as Justin, the developer is now porting it to Macintosh But for the money?? Reaper is a bargain!!!!!
When Reaper gets Linux support, they'll be nothing stopping it |

I remember Howard hinting this just before Justin was going to close the forum. Those code404 days were revolutionary, but fortunately we're all here at E-M now in glorious html |

oh here's a pic from the site- to whet your appetites!; |
I tried downloading this, and it completed successfully, but when I looked in the folder the application was not there, just the skins and other extra peripheral stuff. Tried it three more times and the same thing happened.
Edit: Maybe I'm just ignorant. I tried downloading Crystal but all I got was a .dll file, like with Karma; I don't know what to do with it/how to open it. |

typically, all you have to do is copy the .dll into your .../Steinburg/VSTPlugins directory (in Windows, this will be in C:\Program Files\Steinburg\VSTPLugins
or something very similar to that). Have your VST host re-scan for plugins, or restart your host. Voila! |

What is my VST host? How do I have it scan for plugins or restart it? |

Okay, so it sounds like those things I downloaded can't be used on their own, I need some other softwre program to use them? What's a free one that I can download that will let me use Karma and Crystal? I used to have Fruity Loops but I got rid of it because the free version doesn't let you save anything, and I got annoyed at not understanding how to really use it. |

People have directed me to these sites in the past.
www.kvraudio.com
www.vst-plugin.de
You might want to inquire at the first site, about free vst hosts. |

I've been quite happy with Notepad++ lately;
http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net
One cool thing is a usage of translucency that's of actual practical use(!!!) in search&replace.
It has everything else you could expect a modern text editor to have like hotkeys for everything in sight and nice class/function folding but the overall usage is nicely down to earth and basic, I like it a lot. _________________ Kassen |

Hey that looks like quite a relief after having used the sonic recordnow! [sic] stuff for quite a while. Didn't test it yet, but my laptop's drive is in the supported list at least. _________________ Jan

Somethings weird. I had downloaded CDBurner XP Pro 3 months ago, and had forgotten about it. I was looking to see if I had a ripping program on my laptop. I had launched CDBurner XP Pro 3 and found that it rips to MP3, and a few other formats. After ripping 3 cds with it, I clicked on "Check for new version. I saw a later version was available and downloaded it.
The new version looks totally different, and the rip option is nowhere to be found.
Strange indeed. |

I've just re-installed Version 3, and emailed the author to find out what the deal is.
