The Indigo is a much newer and more expensive machine but I do not think it has inputs for both carrier and modulator (the synth source is the internal sound generator)

Right.. true.. I checked all its openings.. close scrutiny.. This is the problem with all those modern budget synths that gets a vocoder thrown in. -Like the Novastation something.. the intent is to use the synth itself as the carrier and the only input is a mike.. which of course can be OK.. now and then but the great fun with vocoders is not using a mic and voice as the modulator.

Reason 2.5 has inputs for both carrier and modulator, that little bastard!

Mind you, I never take the rubber glove, the hose and the baby oil with me to the music shop.

OK? So Reason has two audio inputs? Hmm.. does this mean that I can set up a second mac with Reason 2.5, sync it with midi... and use it as a vocoding instrument? I can use the M-Audio 410 for this...

You can use any pre-recorded file as both carrier and modulator or play live one of its sound generators assigning the output to one of the vocoder input.
It should not be hard to understand for a rocket scientist like you!
P.S.
I do not think you checked all its openings Evil or Very Mad Twisted Evil
