Warm leatherette Sound (technical inside)

Hi I'm working a on a cover of the song called Warm Leatherette by the Normal (daniel Miller ) on Mute.

Unfortunately I can't quite recreate the exact same Pitch Modulated synth sound...

I used a normal virtual synthesizer (being fairly young I didn't go through the whole analogue synth puchases) and I can recreate the pitch Modulatin effect without any problem but I can't get the sound because the LFO's and modulators affect both oscillators at the same time...(trust me it does and I can't separate them)
Then using the Virtual Instrument version of the Moog Modular ( one of my favourites) I can get close to the sound but I can't get the pitch modulation effect...

So if anyone could help me finding how to do it on moog modular or even by describing the settings I need for oscillators, LFOs, Modulators etc... to get that sound....

I'm asking on this forum because I know that I will get an accurate answer if I do get an answer...

I don't know this music, but I do have a lot of Moog Modular experience. I assume you have the Arturia. Anyhow, can you describe the pitch modulation effect?

I am also very familiar with Arturia's Moog Modular V2. You certainly can modulate the pitch on all 9 individual oscillators. But like Howard, I am not familiar with the sound you are trying to emulate. On the Moog Mod you can modulate the oscillators' pitch in a number of ways: LFO, another osc., the sequencer, an envelope, etc.

ok I'll try to describe it the best I can...

it's a sort of square wave ??? with a fairly slow attack... The first Lfo using a triangle or sinewave ondulation controls the volume creating a quick stutter effect...

And then while stuttering the pitch goes up in a quick glide effect....

I'll try to put an example online or something....

Unfortunately, I know the song well. But I don't know how you would get that sound. Sorry, that doesn't help.

It has been a long time since I heard that track. Mr Miller used pretty simple synthesisers in those days, I think it was done on a Mini Korg 700, the one with the ‘traveller’ filter which had a pair of super sweet, High/Low pass filters controlled by two interlocking sliders. I think it is just a combination of detuned oscillators*, fm from a fast square LFO, pitch bend up, and a dual peak band pass filter with high resonance and a lot of natural overdrive.
That’s from memory, I can’t listen to the example in your link as well.

* The Korg 700 initially had a single oscillator but a later revision included a second to beef up the sound. I wish I never sold mine.

Well the example I put online is not for download (not my choice)... you can only listen to it by pressing the play logo on the website itself...

I don't have any link for places where I can upload them for you to download...

I'm close but not exact. The key is that there are two oscillators out of tune with one another. I have a close representation of it for the Moog Mod V2. If you have that I'll send you my preset. Then you can tune Osc. 1 to taste.

Here's what I came up with. Osc. one needs to be tuned to what's in the song. It's not exact, but I think close.

Try tuning Osc. 1 to Coarse -2 and fine tune to 1.0595. It's still not perfect.

Warm leatherette was done on the korg 700s which had some pretty crazy ringmod in the effects section. i used to have a 700 (without the 's') and could get pretty close to the song by switching on the portamento and setting the envelope to retriger quickly then playing the bottom not followed by the top note , just like in the song!! i imagine if you ringmod that sort of sound youd get closer...?

Remember the minikorg had an always resonant hi pass /
low pass filter thing to.
