I just purchased a new Toshiba L10 Laptop and after a bit of checking, uncovered that it has a Mono input for recording. I know that for best fidelity, I should use an external USB audio device but the built in sound card actually does a pretty good job, it’s just internally connected as mono to the sound card. So most users probably only connect a mono mic, but what about a stereo mic, turntables, G2’s etc. How long has this been common? I would take it back to the shop but it’s the only modern PC to successfully load and run an obscure old piece of WIN3.1 software that I need.

What about getting some older high end PCMCIA audio interface off ebay? Many of these are still pretty good. If you are lucky you could even get both balanced inputs and semipro features?
