adventures in synth recording |
|
|
right now, we are heavily involved in recording sessions..next up is synth
rather than just simply go direct, we decided to hook up the left and right channels to their own amp ..thhen we are mic'ing the amps with a dynamic and condensor pair ...finally we are ambient mic'ing up the room with 2 neumann overhead condensors
we are also recording the direct input
so now we have 8 channels of synth !
the sound is MASSIVE and very 'organic'..much better that just using the flat direct sound
does anyone else have any synth recording secret or [mis]adventures anyone wants to share?
p.s. we were considering sticking a stereo mic in the bathroom downstairs..but that was after too much coffee _________________ Spiral Recordings |

This is pretty much what I have been doing. I am also doing the same thing with Chris Orczy´s Anzac Day too.
Another interesting varition is the pipe the signal from the mic preamps back into filters and envelopes. That way you can have different envelopes controlling the direct line signal from the synth, the signal that goes to the PA and then also the feed back from the microphones. Imagine the "release" to be the live room sound.. in stereo.. If you are going to do this with analog modules you will in most cases need signal adapters. I have borrowed two micros in addition to the NM-1 I have, in order to make this work. You know, these have external inputs too.
There are many col things that can be done. Say, imagine sending a stereo leslie ( live room signal ) feed into a stereo vocoder and use that one as the modulator. There is no such thing as too much gear. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Spring reverb through a noise gate with a side-chain, then taking big parametric eq's to everything is a current favourite of mine. And of cource tape, you can't go wrong with lots and lots of tape everywhere. Oh, and stereo analogue Ibanez chorus.
I've also been experimenting with close-miking the midi keyboard and mixing this with the sound of the sample drums it triggered. _________________ Kassen |
