My Doepfer Modular Subject description: the saga of the knobs
Well, this forum is bad for my wallet. After listening to the wise peeps here I decided to order a modular. I nearly went for a dotcom but was scared off by the VAT and how arsey UK customs can be (I've had quite a few problems before).
So, I went for a Doepfer. I tried phoning the UK distributor, EMIS, no reply. So, I went on the web and ordered it from Thomann. Got an email saying they had stock but when I checked on the web - no, they hadn't. Eighteen of the modules were out of stock! So, I cancelled that order as I don't like being mislead by shops.
I emailed Doepfer to ask for advice at the same time as inquiring at Schneiders Buero. SB were great and I would have gone with them but I got an email from Doepfer saying I probably hadn't had any luck with EMIS as they're shut on Wednesdays. Silly me!
I rang EMIS, spoke to Andy there and he was *great.* Took my grand list and told me where I was missing out. He had mostly everything in stock, just a few things needed to be ordered from Doepfer, like the new, cheaper wooden cases I wanted.

But it's a cool tool doing space, cost and current calculations. And it looks like you bought yourself a good set of modules. _________________ Jan
also .. could someone please turn down the thermostat a bit.

Hi Jyoti,
Sounds pretty exciting, what are you going to do about controlling it, do you already have midi to CV unit or a CV sequencer of some sort?
Cheers
Andy
Well, I'm planning to use it more for radiophonic-type mangling rather than straight synthesis but I can sequence it from my MC-202. I'm a little tempted by this as it looks quite smart:
Heh, yeah I noticed that too! I'm guessing they paid for a Doepfer-only version?

I literally spent hours, moving modules around, checking escalating cost, getting rid of one module and then all the others it needed. And then forgetting to put in essential helper modules. I mean, multiples are hardly glamorous, are they. But necessary!
I think I went through around ten or twenty different configs before settling on a final one. Even then, Andy EMIS set me right on a few things I'd got wrong. _________________ My music: here!

Thanks, Funky40!
...and...
This morning I got my Doepfer modular synth!
As you can see, Andy EMIS stuck the modules in for me as I'm a modular newbie and he packed it all up beautifully:
I've got loads of room for expansion so I'll be looking for other stuff to stick in there. Maybe some Cwejman alongside the Doepfer? Any other suggestions?
And that's enough typing as I'm off to play with it now!

Thanks for the info, Peake! Yeah, as a newbie, I'm still hazy on what fits what.
I was up till 4am, just patching away. I got nothing very musical but it was all amazing fun.
And it's making me realise how little I like using softsynths, even great-sounding ones. It's just so quick to do any modulation I can think of, ideas never get stymied by mousing / menuing around. _________________ My music: here!

Congratulations! Very excited for you... Yes, Plan B, Livewire, Cwejman and Harvestman are all worth checking out for their unique offerings.

Oh w o w . . .
I've connected up my Rogue to the Doepfer (works fine triggering but the CV voltage appears to be falling when a note isn't held - interesting auto-pitch sweeps!) and it is *so much fun.*
Some synthy types I know regard modulars with a mix of distrust and fear. I will have to set them straight: it's the most joy ever, just patching away. This sounds counter-intuitive because if you do want to add vibrato, you do have to think of LFO, wave-type, mod-depth etc. but it does still seem quicker. And unlike a menu-driven synth, if you ever forget what you've done, the wires are hanging there, it's easy to re-trace your steps.
I'll post up some initial stupid patches I've done in a bit.
I'm so, so excited! I feel like I've been missing out the last thirty years of playing synths! _________________ My music: here!
For your newness to the modular world Jyoti, THAT was very cool to see and hear!
Where's the spring 'verb effect? From the Doepfer itself?
Especially cool once you brought the tempo up into the audio range for the entire rhythm!

Cheers, Rykhaard!
I'm just trying out ideas I've had for ages but not done because:
a - existing gear can't do it.
b - existing gear requires too much mousing / menu-diving so I just get bored and wander off.
The modular doesn't get in the way. Just sits there, waiting for stupidness to take place.
So far, I feel that modular synthesis is the easiest I've ever done! Yeah, you have to know what the bits do but it's sooo quick!

Yep! Here's some of the patch details:

The LFO (A143-3) I'm tweaking goes into the clock divider (A160) and clock sequencer(A161), giving me the gates to trig the quad ADSR (A143-2). I'm using three filters, one set to resonate (making the tinkly sound) and another resonating swept very low for the kick. The source is white noise. The reverb is the A199 spring reverb.
Congrats on your new system! I got my first modular last month. Have you slept much yet?
If you want more modules, take a look at the Harvestman, PlanB, Cwejman, Cynthia (a bit harder to get), Livewire (out of stock right now). Analog Haven's website can be a good resource/shopping list. Noisebug is the US dealer for PlanB. I have a mostly PlanB system...loving it! You will no longer have ANY spare cash...just more modules.
