Following the tradition here of people posting pictures of their progress, I'm submitting a few pictures of my first 5 panels, not long ago delivered from Schaeffer. There are a lot of small problems, errors of mine, but all in all I'm very happy with the way they are coming along. I'm completely(?) done with 2 of the 5. I've assembled tons of circuit boards, many of them home made, alot of CGS stuff and others, that I'm now trying group into various modules. I'll probably attempt a dual 259-style VCO next.

These panels are:

a Control Voltage Processor and Mixer (Fonik and CGS)
a Control Voltage 'Array' with Noise, Pulse, Mixer, S+H, Analog Shift Register (MFOS, CGS)
a Dual Band Pass Resonator, with mix (Fonik and CGS)
a Quad Low Pass Gate with Mixer (Fonik and CGS)
and a Quad Function Generator (Topp)

I would have to say they look really great. Where did you score the colored knobs? In fact all the knobs look great, I can never find good ones with skirts.

Look forward to seeing more.

Hey, very nice Buchla format adaptations! Impressive! Is that silkscreening or laser printer labeling?

Thank you very much. I made these panels 4 units high, like Buchla, Serge, etc, and I frrl like iot's the best standard for my specifications. However, I made the significantly thinner than buchla panels-- which I'm sort of regretting. I should have just used the same dimensions, since I'm more less trying to 'reproduce' Buchla modules. I figured I'd make them a little more compact, but I'm having to squeeze too much in now...

They're all surplus. I'm hoping to one day find the skirted ones in blue (or red, or something).

It's the normal Schaeffer etching, which I then filled in with blue paint crayon (as per Fonik's instructions, here in the forum).

For me, Buchla really hit the sweet spot as far as size & density are concerned.

Very dense modules, for the most part, yet you can still get your hands in there.

Those are gorgeous - nice work, there! I agree about those knobs also, very swanky. How are you mounting these modules? Good luck making a 259, looks like a lot of work. I love the Buchla aesthetic, it's like lab equipment meets high art

excellent work, I love the knob positioning on buchlas very inventive.

Considered spraying black to blue? ive been tinkering with the idea - although colour matching and durability may be difficult. probably would have to be done with proper spray gun and mixed paint rather than spray cans

Lovely!

Good surplus knobs - blue is great.
Were the switches with the rubber caps surplus too? I'm sure people have discussed where to get those little caps from, but can't think where now....

I have definitely thought a lot about this, and I was asking here about it a few months back-- but I decided for the time being, based on comments I read, that it might require much more time and effort (to get them perfect) than I can spare. I don't have a background in painting.

Mr Clack wrote:

For me, this has been probably the hardest part to figure out, especially using multiple boards (one panel having 3 full boards, and a small mixer).

I'm mounting them flat against the back of the panel. I only have two panels mounted so far, and for both I used an adhesive standoff product from Allied. It doesn't have a real long standoff, or post-- but, fortunately it just clears my hardware (on the back of the panel).

These adhesives seem to hold pretty well, I have a lot of stuff stacked on them, and they are pretty secure, so far. However, it's difficult, with the density of these panels to find enough space for the little square of adhesive to rest on the back of the panel. This is a major problem-- and I may switch to normal standoffs that drill into the panel (which means I'll have to drill holes for the ones I've already made). But my initial concern was to eliminate the need for extra hardware on the front of the panel (screws for the standoffs)

With the Quad Gate (Fonik), I etched two circuits each on two small boards, and piggybacked them. The 'Control Array' has a perf board first, and then 3 PCBs stacked on top. Both of them are much deeper than I originally anticipated (about 4 1/2 inches, depth). Which means my enclosure will have to have significant depth.

You know, a CGS VCO and Wave MUltiplier gets you pretty darn close to the 'Principle Oscillator on the 259. I have some nice little EFM 'Prodigy' VCOs that I'd like to use for the 'Modulation Osc'. I'm not neccesarily looking for a reproduction of Buchla, I'm happy to just get some of their functionallity.

Just ordered the caps from mouser, from a link I got here. I wish they had purple.

Incidentally, Allied also has very similar, if not the same, knobs as the ones I used here. However, they only have them in black and with 1/8" shaft. I was looking for the larger (VCO) size, and indeed they have them too (with 1/4" shaft).

Also, worth noting, these knobs are definitely not the same as used in the Buchla 200. Mine have finely 'knurled' sides, whereas the Buchla ones, still in production by Rogan hardware, have flat, smooth sides.

Much too long, and I've still got a lot more to come. Eventually I may even have time to use them... Embarassed

the original plan was to do a brief-case portable kit--with two rows on top and two rows on bottom; But I'm not sure if how I'd be able to power all those circuits in portable system. So I'm reconsidering, thinking of scaling down some.

V-un-V's Buchla-like 3-tier boat project, under another topic here, might make a good solution for me.
