I'll do my best to build a second system asap Wink

How did you make those panels?

thnks

I had a friend who made me the panels in 3mm aluminum, just the holes. He has a computerized drill, so i drew them in front panel designer, and sent him the file. And got 3 panels, each 200mm x 540mm. Then I got some Folex Sticky Jet Transparent paper. Printed the artwork on my inkjet printer. Attached to the panels and then used spray varnish to get a protective coating.

I drew the artwork in illustrator..

I really like the design of your panels and particularly the way the titles of each of the modules line up across the bottom. Also it's refreshing to see
two colors on the front panels instead of monochrome for a change!

Years ago at San Francisco State University I designed a system with Buchla sized panels where each type of module had their knobs laid out differently. There was no "grid" to follow as I was just placing knobs and jacks around oh so very carefully with a sort of Zen rock garden aesthetic, but then that slowly morphed into a decision to make twelve different modules in total, and to lay each one out with front panel components arranged to match the constellations of the zodiac, (Leo, Virgo, Libra, etc.).

Back then we didn't have inkjet printers and had to make panels with rub-on lettering, bottles of White-out, and a Xerox machine! I glued the Xeroxed templates onto each piece of aluminum, and then sandwiched a thin sheet of clear acrylic between the components and the panel for protection before drilling, which worked out rather well because the acrylic was soft and did not shatter.

I build a another little "Click-Box" synth with a hard plexiglass front panel that cracked on me about a week after I'd made it - and that was the last time I ever considered plexiglass, lol!

Love your panel designs!

Cynthia

My God zthee! Those are the most elegant DIY panel layouts I've ever seen. I'm jealous. At least I can console myself with the fact that I like to jack with my left hand and twiddle with my right(the synth, pervert) so It's all backwards to me Wink

Well, the Aries synth sold for a whopping $2,555.55

http://cgi.ebay.com/Rare-Vintage-1978-Aries-Modular-Synth_W0QQitemZ230274287821

I didn't end up bidding on it -- was tempting but I need MORE floor space, not less.

A new Aries (kit) back in 1976 with the keyboard, power supply, and fourteen modules would have cost around $1600 (I'd have to dig out the old price list do get an exact figure).

I would suspect that the power supply caps need to be replaced. The Aries is a well-designed synth and my guess is that it won't be expensive to get it up and running -- just time-consuming. Smile

I've kept my Aries running to spec, however I do power it up every day -- yep, I've powered it up daily now for over 30 years -- whether I use it or not. The only caps I've ever had to replace have been the power supply capacitors (the filter capacitors).

Congratulations to whoever won it!

Yeah, $2555 is a good chunk of change. An Aries system isn't what I'm particularly after these days but if it had gone for under $700, as the price had been stuck at for most of the auction, I might of thrown myself on something long and sharp for not bidding on it! Shocked Wink

This is possibly encouraging! Smile Come this October, I'll've had my co-worker's Farfisa VIP 400 organ for 3 years, without powering it up. With the organ being almost 40 years old, I was wondering the other day, whether I may have to pop the unit open to start replacing electrolytics in it, before firing it up for the 1st time.

I'll soon have enough completed for my modular to haul it outside for a live improv. video shoot. I'm hoping big time, that the Farfisa will work as well, so that I have SOMEthing decent for doing pads with. Smile

If anyone has any advice for this old relic of an organ, please do clue me in! Very Happy

Zthee your modules are gorgeous!!!
Beautiful system - sounds good too.

Cynthia - when you walk up to your system how do you ever narrow down where to start??? Also do you have a separate closet or room addition for your patch cables?
Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
Seriously that's an amazing amazing amazing system. I just want to touch it. And I think it wants me to touch it, too. No really, I hear it talking to me right now.... Shocked Wink

Cheers
Phil

Here is a photo of what I call Drew's Noize Box II. A couple of custom Serge panels in a home built 3/4" solid oak case with some old surplus knobs instead of the standard Serge knobs. My escape place...

Thanks, I thought that Aries went for a fair price. With 14 modules thats about
$180 per module plus a 5 octave keyboard. If you convert 1978 dollars to
the much smaller 2008 dollar, it went for half what it would have cost in1978.
I have wanted an Aries since 1978, just got around to getting one now.
The seller claimed the Aries was built then left in the attic for 30 years.
The modules and keyboard look brand new, just a little dusty. And
every module functions properly. Just needs a proper case with a power
supply!
The filters do sound unique as they won't self-oscillate, but are on the
brink when you crank the Q up. Very nice! This is a full Aries system
with 3 oscillators, 2 multimode filters, Phase/flange, reverb, ring mod,
mixer, 2 EG's, S&H noise, LFO, and VCA. The Aries found a home where
is will be played regularly now!

Here is a photo of some of my modular setup:
On top left a custom walnut Minimoog/modular with center modules DIY, bringing
out the patch points on the Mini, with bottom row in MOTM format. Below
a Moog Voyager.
On top right a Roland System 100m on top of a 1969 Moog 1P. Below a NED
Synclavier II on top of a Hammond L-100 chopper.

Hey Dave, just curious... what are the longest length patch cords you need for your 18U?

Thanks,

Edisonrex - what do you think of the Encore Freq Shifter? I've been eyeballing that one since before I started purchasing modular gear. You never hear it mentioned much or I haven't anyway.
The Macbeth sure looks sweee-eeet.
thanks
