20 days into 2009 already and the builds continue. Post your stuff!
Here's last weekend's effort (mostly Saturday with some debugging on Sunday). I had a cold solder joint on of all things the power pin on U2. Silly me.
The connectors on that board are dense, so I ended up using 12-pin connectors, with some 3 pin ones on the end.

dense, indeed. i know that (mea culpa). however, i use stackable connectors, i mean you could put them in rows. i have 3pol and 2pol, so i can create any width i need.
anyways, nice built.
here's what i have done so far (you might already have seen it, though): the PS3100 DoubleTrouble Resonators with x-panning. as you can see i placed the connector footprints with enough spacing to use any connector.

BTW edison. did you add the 100k resistor to GND right after the capacitor for AC coupling? i can't tell from the picture. it is necessary to install this resistor to make the AC coupling work (check out the lates documentation at my site: http://www.modular.fonik.de/pdf/f-mixer-rev2.pdf). _________________

It is underneath the board, jumping from the underside of the terminal to R28's connection.
It was easier for me to have it there.
Lovely PS3100 too, BTW. I hadn't seen those pics. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

Getting back in gear after a slow moving (building wise) year.
Aiming for one panel a weekend for the next several weeks. 2 done so far.
First one: 8 Thomas Henry VCAs for the 21st century, with each group of four also having a mix output. 2 CGS stomp box adapters. 4 generic attenuated banana to 1/4" outputs.
Second: Another Buchla 291 filter, all the same bugs as the first, which I aim to eradicate now that I am slightly smarter than a year and a half ago.Still awesome filter! MFOS mulitmode VCF, I love these. Another 4 VCAs, this time strait up IN/CV/OUT. Mankato w/ LEDs and 8 outs, glad to have a second one, super modulation workhorse.
And a snap of the guts of the filter panel before finishing up.
Next couple weeks will see a bunch of ADSRs (21st century again), and pairs of QFGs and PS3100 resonators, and a bunch more mixers. Then a pair of that killer PIC sequencer. Then a bunch of gigs. The year is off to a great start.
Oh yeah, I am anxiously awaiting a big bag of the Davies clone knobs.

This is my first DIY synth after the Paia Fatman I built in 2008.
The top unit is a Paia 9700 VCO with a busted oscillator A. I think the Lm13700 might be bad, but I tried 4 different ones with no change yet. The second panel is an MFOS 24db/oct VCF and the MFOS Log/Lin VCA and the bottom panel is 3 MFOS super simple ramp/saw LFO's. I don't have a picture yet of the sample and hold, white/pink noise generator panel yet, but it looks like more of the same, but with holes drilled for some CV distributor's when I get more jacks and TL084's. My semester break is over though so I think my building may have to die down a little. Happy synthesizing!

Very cool to see someone else's work early in their building history. It reminds me of mine back in '92 / '93. 5U rack panels filled with stuff. Black paint and white lettering for everything. I've photos of them around somewhere. Will have to search. |

I really wanted to make my panels very colorful but since I did all this in January and it's been snowing and/or below freezing here in MA I figured the Krylon probably wouldn't be too happy. |

The colored ones from Smallbear?
Where'd you get the colored banana cables? The only place I've found so far is E-Z-Hook.
I'm thinking of changing formats from Moog to something smaller with bananas |

Pomona cables. Get 'em at a place called TestPath. Search this forum you'll find the link. |

Are you gonna convert your whole system, or start a new one? _________________ " I went through quite a few trannies til I found one I liked" - Wild Zebra |

Really nice work everyone! Numberone, you are beating me to the punch with the ASF21C vca's and adsr's! I just finished a single sided PCB layout for the envelope generator, based loosely on TH's design from the old MAP web site the fits my modular a bit better - I put in an MTA156 power connector, ferrite beads, pot and jack pads for all connects (I hate flying wires!), and added a inverted output as an option. I'm making up PCB's this weekend. Then I will work on the vca layout. I'll be sure to post some pic's as I make progress.
There's always catch up work to do....!
Regards,
Phil |

The synthesizer birthing process is underway. Gestation will take some time. My first modules finished. Don't have cabinet built yet.
Complete (save for knobs):
2 - SN Voice
o Panel + bracket + most Components: Bridechamber
o Boards : sMs
o Everything else (mouser/digikey, etc.)
1 - MOTM 101 Noise/SH
o Panel / bracket / key components: MOTM
o Everything else (Mouser/Digikey/Ccomm for Rg174)
Still under construction:
1 - TH percussion synth
o Board : EM
o Parts (Mouser/Digikey/etc)
o Panel / bracket- still need
1 - MFOS Soundlab Plus + Sample & Hold
o Boards + components : MFOS + Mouser/digikey/etc.
o Panel / bracket : still need
1 - MOTM VCO 300 (unable to make it squeak despite great help from Paul) Awaiting replacement parts
Parts sitting in box:
1 - TH Mankato VCF
o Board : Magic Smoke
o Components : Mouser/Digikey
o Panel / bracket : Bridechamber
Stuff ordered and not yet here
VCA (MOTM) / AD (Fritz) / PS (MOTM) / other things...
Stuff Scrounged cheaply from Surplus Store
1 - Power One HDCC-150W-A +/1 15V and +5v -
Stranded hookup wire: All sorts
Numerous ICs / Caps / Etc.
I am still not sure where I will locate this synth when I have enough modules to actually make my first serious sounds. May have to buy a new home to accommodate it, but in this market, that will be tough. Also, the spouse may complain.
Once I figure out how to do pix, I will post here.
Cheers,
Joe |

My first designs of the year : two keyboard matrix scanners using PIC16F88 and which provide V/Oct CV (over five octaves) and GATE. The analogue modulation boards (pitch wheel, modulation wheel, delayed vibrato...) are currently under design. The left board is for FATAR (8x8 matrix) keybeds, the right board is for CASIO, EVOLUTION (11x9 matrix) keybeds.
These are intended to be used in the yusynth CV/GATE keyboard controller.

Here's the first thing I've finished this year. Took a bit longer than it might have because I worked up 3 of these pcb's at the same time and also 2 other ones (bananalogue VCS's) all at the same time.

Thanks!!!
The panels are 1.5mm aluminium covered with autoadhesive vinyl.
I had the vinyl printed at a graphic shop, and is covered with a satin
(kind of textured) transparent vinyl layer to protect the printing.
I just drilled the aluminium and then pasted the vinyl.
Is really cheap.
Here where I live (Buenos Aires, Argentina) laser engraving will cost me
about 35 dollars per panel, silk screening will cost me about 15 dollars per
panel, this method cost me about less than 1 dollar per panel.
