oscilator sync |
 |
|
Hi all,
With an Access Virus, I get a really interesting timbre when I sync 2 osc.
From Access:
Quote: | The oscillator Sync mode produces wonderful screaming results with the kind of angry aggression rarely heard from modeling synths. Similarly, the five FM modes are capable of generating all sorts of pleasantries. When the Sync and FM modes are combined and the oscillators' pitches fiddled with, many tasty harmonics occur. Putting the third oscillator into action really fattens up a sound and creates tertiary harmonics |

From Clavia :
Quote: | OSCILLATOR SYNC
A waveform of an oscillator with a Sync input can be synchronized with a signal of another oscillator. A Sync modulation input is in a way very similar to a yellow Trigger or Rst input. Oscillator synchronization forces an oscillator module to restart its waveform at the pitch of the audio signal connected to the Sync input. Each time the modulating audio signal at the Sync input goes from a value of zero or below to any value greater than zero, the oscillator waveform will restart at either its own zero crossing point or at a flank in the waveform. The result is that the synced oscillator will inherit the pitch of the audio signal connected to the Sync input, which results in a complex waveform that depends both on the oscillator pitch setting and on the modulator pitch. When sync is used, the oscillator pitch is locked to the modulator pitch. If you change the modulator pitch, you will affect the overall pitch, and if you change the oscillator pitch, this will create changes in timbre rather than in pitch. If you let the synchronized oscillator pitch vary continuously, from an LFO or other modulator, you will change the timbre of the wave in a very interesting and characteristic way. |

I don't understand how to obtain this timbre with my G2X. I made a simple patch, see my screenshot. When I tweak the "semitone" knob on the osc2 the timbre is not what I want with my G2X.

I made a screenshot from a patch with Tassman too and the timbre is not too bad. Listen to the .mp3 too.
Well.... How can I sync 2 osc and got this timbre with my G2X?
Thanks

The semitone knob on OscB2 controls the master oscillator. You would want to sweep the slave frequency to get the effect you want. The effect only happens when slave freq>master. |

I wrote "osc2" because on my Access Virus I tweak the semitone from the osc2 to obtain a nice timbre... but you're right, on my screenshot the osc1 is slave and I have to tweak this one. Before to write this topic I tried this and the result is bad. With a sqare it's ok. I can tweak the semitone and the shape knobs with good timbre. But with a sawtooth the result is very different from the Virus and Tassman.
Btw I fond how to obtain a good result with a sawtooth now. I have to add a new cable from the "Osc2 Output" to the "FM Lin Osc1" and adjust this knob. The timbre is awesome after this and similar to the Virus.
Thanks ian-s for your help and sorry for my bad english. Cya. |

So is what you did in the end, sync the Osc1 and FM Osc 1 and then tweak the FM depth or tweak Osc1 pitch? I also have a virus so I am just intrigued into what you did to get the sound yoru after, any chance you can post the patch?
Lately I have been playing with them side by side and trying to learn from some of the better presets in the virus.
Cheers

tweak the FM depth and tweak Osc1 pitch after.
