Well, they told me a few choice lies when I interviewed at Google Labs in 2007.

Thanks. The initial goal of the "Dale God" was "thinking about what I'll do with this photo back at school instead of paying attention to this wonderful desert," but it wound up being more of "a little something to scare my students." Still useful. One of the students ran with the theme and suspended her head and her boyfriend's head above the water using four or five images, each of which was radically different in appearance than the final composition. They actually did come off as Greek gods looking out over the world. So she made it work.

My wife gets better than half the credit for this one for seeing and taking the original series of shots.

Too bad there's not enough time to focus on either musical or visual composition. Some students in the robotics club are working with an open source vision analysis program (Open CV) that could be useful for either still or video image analysis -> composition, and might even be amenable to a variant of Scrabble-to-Midi that feeds off of architectural structures instead of letters and words. No time for that, I'm afraid.

Hey Dale, since you seem to possibly know about this, how would I create a video effect in which I'm walking down the street while my clothing is changing around me? I'm pretty sure the best result would not be a simple transition.

Well, when it comes to video, I am a complete ignoramus! Somewhat of a poseur for digital images, actually, although I am learning by necessity. Everyone in my family has done their fair share of photography at various times, and I've written computer graphics software in spells over the years. Audio, of course. But video at present is outside my ken.

That would be worth a post to Schmooze, though. There are plenty of video savvy folks here. I've worked sound in the same room as Ruori working videos for the last two EM festivals. They know an awful lot about video processing!

Interesting coincidence. We rely on the sky here in Allentown also. Wink

This is from Sunday's walk. Still deciding which I like better, the treatments, not the dogs.

Ah, the poor dears do not mind. The younger one shows her affection by clacking her teeth inches from my face! This is how the old man does dog play.

In fact, I love them both.

Beautiful dogs Dale. What a wonderful privilege it is to have the company of such animals.

Yes, it is almost as much fun as having little kids at home again. Pure energy and joy.

It's funny, many visitors are scared or put off by the younger one (Ziggy). She certainly has the spirit of a Wild Thing, but is completely innocent of guile.

The slightly older one (Frida) is the one that visitors are quick to announce that they "really like," but Frida has more than a little of the Trickster Coyote in her spirit. She seemingly knows how to plan a caper, or at least to respond to an opportunity for one. Most visitors get a glimpse at most of this side of her, because it lies under the surface.

In discussing her with an old Bell Labs friend, he said that he grew up next to a neighbor with a Shepherd, and that the dog was smarter than half the kids in the neighborhood. Cool

I have absolutely no trouble believing the dog is smarter than half the kids in the neighbourhood. Especially these days.

I like the second photo (first treatment). Second treatment was overdone.

GF and I hope to have a dog someday. We just have too many cats at the mo.

Subject description: Somewhat early skiing for a change.
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

Two hours on my cross-country skis as of this afternoon. Much better start to the winter than I had the last two seasons.

It turns out that I can still cut the mustard, too. There is one final climb on a logging road to the top of the ridge, for which I have recently popped off my skis and walked because it is getting too hard. 5+ years ago I'd always leave the skis on, but then it became too difficult. Well, I have a binding that is becoming suspect, and I always wonder whether the next time I undo it may be its end. So I left the skis on and clomped up that final steep rise with no trouble at all. It was a great afternoon!
