Best mastering effects chain? |
|
|
Hi, just wondering if anyone has any tips, vst's and advice on effects chains etc for final production on a song?
My production is coming along, I still can't seem to get my final mixes how I want it. Half the problem of course, is that i don't quite know what it is i want! If you want to see what I mean, check out some of my songs at the links below... I quite like some of them, but I just want my production to be in your face, attention grabbing, bowel loosening and tight and crispy...
I am looking for both advice on any good effects and settings but also a good sequence of mastering devices eg: eq > compressor > master.
Any advice, tips or good (preferably cheap or free!) VST's or hardware would be much appreciated.
peas and love

I dunno - the stuff I've heard sounds pretty good. Of course, I've not heard un-lossy compressed versions yet.
I tend to use my old hardware Finalizer nowadays, which I love for its tweakability. On the software side, Ozone does the job for me, combined with Waveburner. _________________ My music: here! |

cheers for that, going to look into getting Ozone now, and eventually moving off PC into Mac land, as it is blatantly better! _________________ My tunes here and on Myspace. Come and have a listen, become a friend, leave criticism!

Shhh... don't want to start another platform war...
They're nearly as pointless as the digital vs. analogue or plugin vs. hardware wars!
But I do agree with you, Macs rule! _________________ My music: here! |

Unfortunately there is no direct advice anyone can give you on your productions, other than help you understand what plugins will help you achieve certain effects. The first thing to do is to compare your productions to an artist that is closest to the sound quality your looking for, this will help you identify in your own head what elements you maybe lacking (ie tighter sound, levels, dynamics etc) after you establish the fundamental differences you then have some direction, the next step is to thoroughly learn your signal processors (EQ, compressors, Limiter etc). Aim to choose sounds that you don't have to use much processing on, as too many people use too much which usually leaves their productions very lifeless (less is more). learn how to use your hardware and software (make sure you understand what each knob does) and you will know what signal processor you need to add. It's a long but rewarding road to great mastering, so it pays to share info.
Learn your tools and compare.
I have some posts on STN which might help you, so feel free to check them out too. _________________ Hyphen,

Get Ozone... it will make your music loud.
(If that's what you're after) |
