Hi, I just started learning SuperCollider and haven't worked much in programming at all for several years. I knew BASIC when I was a kid, and dabbled in C, so completely vexed wondering why I'm having trouble at the moment.

My biggest problem I'm facing right now (as I've been working with the tutorials and courses I found through the SuperCollider sourceforge site) is the use of parentheses in defining chunks of code as individuals commands.

No matter what kind of variation I use, even copy-pasting directly a piece of code from a tutorial into a supercollider post window and entering <enter> (yes, I do know the difference between return/enter at least!) it keeps giving me parse errors like "unmatched ')'" even though it has an opening ( and closing )

what am I doing wrong!?! totally perplexed. even this chunk of code taken directly from the Wilson/Harkins tutorial is returning with a parse error:

(
f = { arg a, b;
        a - b;
};
f.value(5, 3);
)

Do I need to be hitting ctrl+return (mac user) for every line ending with a ; ? shouldn't this work as one portion of code only requiring I hit <enter> at the end of the last ) ???

so confused.

Yeah .. bit quiet here, guess the scene is elsewhere ... sorry, don't know any answer myself, just wanted to say welcome ... my own head moved into a kyma thingie recently ... it is really too bad that investing in a complex platform, like supercollider, or kyma, or as some do here build there own hardware, or FPGA and DSP code even transfers so badly to the other platforms ... sorry got taken away a bit by my own thoughts Laughing
