Moog System 55 cabinet dimensions & size.. |
 |
|
Does anybody have a Moog System 55
or have access to one ?
I need the external dimensions of the slant cabinet
and the top cabinet(s) of this beast.
The internal dimensions would be appreciated too.
I'm building a Moog sys 55 clone and am in the cabinet making now.
I haven't been able so far to find any documents on that.
I know the sides, bottoms and tops are made of black oak 3/4" thick,
I figure the slant cabinet angle is around 15deg. and that the inner width
would be 8.125" X 22 U1 modules but that's only what I have so far.
Any info very welcomed!
Thanks

I think walnut was also used for these cabinets. Not sure of the dimensions, for my eurorack cabinets, I went for roughly the same "aspect ratio" as the Moog systems. The standard 19" width just seemed too narrow.
In the end, I've made the cabinets narrower because of patch cord length.
To summarise the rambling, I'd go with what you know (module size) and estimate the rest of the dimensions from this.
Came across this site: http://www.siliconbreakdown.com/moog55.html
Better pictures than I had at the time, made mine with dowel joints, but the pictures show an lapjoint below and a very ornamental joint up top. Didn't see the top one earlier, that is nice.
I guess there will be variation though, because Moog used several local cabinetmakers (and coffin makers?).
From the pictures, slant angle seems to be substantial, I think more than 15 degrees, something like 20 or so? |

I haven't made any Moog-specific cases, but I have used Larry Hendry's MOTM design. You can see his page at: http://www.wiseguysynth.com/larry/namm/namm.htm The front slant on his design is a little less than 15 degrees...
I'm confused by your numbers. Are you saying Moog modules are 8.125" tall? I thought they were 5U. (I don't own any, so I can't check.) I think the module width is 2.125". Is that what you meant to type instead?

Sorry about this mistyping..
Yes I meant 2.125" wide multiples. The height is 8.75"
I'll check the posted links for help further.
