I guess I'm a little late posting this notice, since early registration for the one-day MUME 2012 workshop ended yesterday. (Regular registration is still open.) I will be presenting a paper entitled "Quantum Composition and Improvisation" some time in the afternoon. It's about basing virtual instrument design and score capture around a model of Quantum Interaction. It's a model that I've used as a loose guide since I started working with electro-music in 2005, that I hope to apply more consistently. I'll post a link to the paper and slides after the workshop.

What is Musical Metacreation? Is it creating things that make music?

Yes Very Happy

Position paper, research paper and demo presentations will be on various approaches to creating things that help to generate music in some way.

Beyond that, it's hard to say what to expect of this workshop, seeing as how this is the first one. I have had a mental model for quantum composition and improvisation ever since I was working on the software for this paper in early 2006. The mention of superposition in the abstract comes out of seeing chord traces from the finger-picking analysis system take on the form of a cloud-like cluster of related chords rather than fixed, pre-planned chords, largely due to playing them as arpeggios. Quantum music will make more sense when I post the paper after the workshop.

The only other researchers I can find applying quantum concepts to music are a team in Italy applying them to analysis of music. I am interested in virtual instrument design, composition and improvisation. I expect to be "attacked" at the workshop, and indeed one of the reviews had that flavor. Fortunately, another review supported it very eloquently. Best of all, I found a host of activities in cognitive science and related fields that apply quantum mathematical techniques to analyzing data from various areas outside the traditional scope -- see the Wikipedia article on quantum cognition. I only found out about this work after the paper was accepted. It provides me with some ammo

This workshop should be interesting. Idea

EDIT: It appears that they moved the above link to
http://www.metacreation.net/mume2012/forums.html?pg=program
That program gives a view of what's in store.

I posted my paper from the workshop, Quantum Composition and Improvisation, over here.
