I jammed a bit with a friend yesterday, we both use Live but I also used the Octatrack and an OP-1. I stumbled a bit at first, but after a while I got into tweaking filters and stuff on the Octa, besides having fun trigging tracks etc. Good vibrations! Smile

/Stefan

Can you turn the looper on and off by MIDI footpedal?

Found the answer to my question in the video on this page - which after lengthy verbal explanation, demonstrates looping on the Octatrack under control of a Behringer MIDI foot controller:
http://weareelektron.tumblr.com/post/23487461681/octatrack-os-1-2-is-here-chief-among-the-many

Looks like a great fit for what I'd like to do, which is mix live looping and processing of my viola, violin, and guitar with prepared sequenced material.

The amount and quality of information on this device has of course improved considerably since the start of this thread. Elektron has its own video tutorial series which looks nice. In addition, there's an "Octatrack Tips" video series which is good and makes me more excited about getting an Octatrack. Example:

...and nearly a year later, I've learned:

1. How to loop on Octatrack
2. How to sample from a loop I'd just recorded from live instrument and chop/slice the sample.
3. How to use the sequencer to trigger the slices
4. How to use my Roland FC-300 to trigger the most basic looping functions.

Here's a demo I recorded when I was just using my hands to control looping functions (no footpedal yet) - it includes looping and slicing of loops: https://soundcloud.com/governorsilver/octatrack-viola-demo-1

Very steep and frustrating learning curve, but also rewarding. The new reverbs introduced in OS 1.25 sound great.

The answer is still yes, but it's complicated.

The MIDI foot controller must be able to send MIDI CC or MIDI Note Number. The Pickup Machine Tutorial in the manual emphasizes the MIDI Note Number method, which is a mistake, imo, because it is so much harder to program a proper MIDI Note Number message than a MIDI CC message. Just follow the instruction to send MIDI CC #59 with the value set to the desired MIDI Note Number value to activate looping functions and other functions.

The Roland FC-300 was also very difficult to learn how to program to send the desired MIDI messages. I'll post the exact steps I took in the "loopers tutorial" I'm working on. I use it because I got it with my Roland VG-99 and didn't see the need to buy another MIDI foot controller just for the Octatrack.

Here's the Octatrack in action for the first time in an improvisational ensemble setting - I started by looping my viola into two pickup machine (looper) tracks. I then sliced audio from the loops, assigned the slices to sample triggers, then turned on the sequencer which played back the slices: https://soundcloud.com/bashateez/zoom0004

I'll have to figure out what the deal was on that volume drop later

I never heard of mindmeister, but this is way cool!!!!!!!! I am not interested in the octotrack, but I had fun with the "mindmap" nevertheless. Thanks for putting it together and sharing it.

Hi Steve,

I use Mindmiester for planing and taking notes. It's saved me huge amounts of time. I post a lot of my maps publically. I have 52K views on about 27 maps :^). http://www.mindmeister.com/users/channel/103187.

You can get a free account and give it a spin :^). Maps sync to your ipad/iphone as well.
