Saw a Pavey DPM2 synth for cheap in used gear store Subject description: Is it any good? |

So I was walking around So. Tacoma area and decided to look around a "Musician's Exchange" store - I noticed this Peavey DPM2 synth for fairly cheap, but didn't get around to hook it up and try it out. My questions are is this synth any good and what are your opinions from your own experience with this synth? And why the hell does it say 'Phase Modulation' on it if it's (as learned from online research) a substractive rompler? I only know phase modulation as the kind that's used in Yamaha's FM synths (phase modulation labeled as FM) can anyone explain this to me? |

So.. any opinions? No? What about the "Phase Modulation" mislabel? |

I only ever used a dpm3, which was a bog standard workstation/s&s synth. It actually had sampling* in it too tho, which i dont think the dpm2 did. It was actually bloody miraculous at the time, when akais were about £5k
It was ok for what it did, but it was my first synth, so by no means an expert, and i sold it about 18 years ago, for probably peanuts (doh!)
*you could transfer samples via midi sds. wow, old! |

So why is it called a "Digital Phase Modulation" synth when it's not? To make appear interesting? If that's the case then I'll call it shenanigans. |

I tested a Peavey DPM2 synth way back then. It is a scaled down version of the DPM 3, no sampling and less features. The DPM models supposedly were upgradeable. It was at least one module offered for the DPM 2, which was a sequencer. The DPM 3 had more slots for more upgrades. I think Peavey never really managed to pull this off. At the time it was an interesting concept and Peavey claimed that these synths were future-proof. –No need for buying a new synth. All you needed was installing an upgrade module. Quite a few lucky owners were disappointed when the promised modules never became available. I have no idea how many modules that Peavey managed to release. The sequencer for the DPM 2 is the only one I can remember seeing in a shop. Supposedly one of the problems with the upgrades was the distribution. The upgrades never found their way to the shops, and too few bought the DPMs anyway.
The audio quality was pretty OK. I think the DPM 2 was probably a decent keyboard, but this must be 20 years ago. –And I didn't buy one. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

BTW, they released the DPM C8 master keyboard about a year or so after the DPM 3, and that one got rave reviews. I think it was rated as one of the best master keyboards at the time. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"
