When I was young I had some "favorite things" that gave me joy just owning them. I got a thrill from looking at them and handling them, even when I wasn't precisely using them for their intended purpose.

But as I grew older I didn't appreciate "things" so much. They were just things. For example, cars I've owned have just been transportation. Getting a new car is about as exciting as buying new socks. (Granted, I'm not a car enthusiast. I wasn't so blase' about the new Triumph Bonneville I bought in '09.)

I turned 59 this year. Little in the way of material posessions excites me.

A notable exception is the feeling I get from being around my favorite synths. I just want to hug and pet them like I do my wife and cats. Each time I enter my modest studio and turn on my equipment I get a distinct thrill. All those knobs and keys and flashing lights are very comforting and exciting. All my cares are pushed aside and I feel happy. And this is all before I even play a single note!

Is anyone else this refreshingly immature?

Totally.

And the feeling is even greater when it is something that I built myself.
