Very Happy
I let it stay over night and put it outside this morning. It rested on a daisy for a while and at some point it flew off
but I missed it. New zeeland bees must be scary. I guess she probably doesn't like spiders either.

This morning I woke up with some pigeon sounds Shocked It really really likes that spot. So I took it away for now.
I do feel a bit bad as it kept flying over to my balcony tring to find it.

As I expected there was a lot of bee activity today and I streamed and recorded live audio.
You can already find a recording from yesterday here

I also recorded a short video. Of course as soon as I started filming there were hardly any bees in sight,
but a couple showed up about 25 seconds in. The video can be found here.

I transplanted the Phacelia tanacetifolia, repotted the daisies and sown some poppies. I also repotted one of the
Numex twilight pepper plants which has a very healthy looking root system. Still none of the other pepper seeds
have sprouted but I did put some of the seeds I got last year (which did really well) in some zip lock baggies to see
if I have any luck with those. I am surprised that the Purple Tiger seeds I harvested myself don't do anything yet.

guess who also decided to pay another visit Shocked

When it initially arrived it didn't stay very long as its nesting spot is still gone. It did add some sounds to the recording which
I will post later. It's one persistant pigeon though as a couple hours later it returned and actually stayed. I was just having
dinner but wondered what it was up to so took a quick peek outside. Apparently it found another suitable spot. Since I was
recording audio I let it stay untill I finished my dinner but it flew off as soon as I went outside. I placed some BBQ skewers
in the pot and some bamboo sticks in some other ones so it couldn't use that spot anymore either. It did return a while later
but after walking around a bit and realizing the second spot had also become useless it left again. It might return but I'll just
get some more skewers in case they are needed. I find it rather amusing but I hope it will find a good spot somewhere else.

I also saw a blue tit eating from the peanut butter and I should have some sounds of it in the audio recording, but I am not sure
if I will be able to locate that section (it's about 7 hours in length).

The Snapdragon seeds are sprouting too. The seeds were very small, almost like dust, so there are a lot of them.
There are also things happening in the pot with the bee seed mix.

I also uploaded some pigeon recordings here.

I think this thread needs more photos Embarassed

I made some supports to mount a planter on the wall which has some ivy in it. Hopefully it wil climb and turn it into a nice green wall.
If I have any luck with the passiflora seeds I will put one of those in there as well although I don't expect it wil do very well as they
prefer a lot of sun. I did spot a morning glory in there which got into the soil as they produced a LOT of seeds last year. I also put
some small ferns in there and the violet that I found (the one with the small pink flowers) which has been doing really well. I also
buried a plastic pot in there with some other tiny plants which I suspect are annuals. I'd like to have some ground covering plant
in it that will grow over the edge. If possible with some flowers but it has to be one that does well in the shade.

I am pretty sure now that I didn't have much luck with the peppers because the seeds were bad. All the seeds from last
year (except for the tinkerbell) that I put in ziplock bags a week ago (april 4th) have already sprouted Razz . It sucks that I lost
my advantage of starting early but it does mean they can go outside pretty quickly where they will get a lot better light than
when I keep them inside under artificial lights.

Speaking of sprouting seeds, some of the phlox & nigella seeds outside have sprouted. There is also something growing
in the containers with Atropa belladonna and Datura metal but I am not 100% convinced yet it's not something else.
It would be great to finally have some deadly nightshade. Maybe I can get some Mandragora next year. Twisted Evil

Maybe some Sedum variety?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sedum

Some are lovely, they can stand drought pretty well, some are small, evergreen mostly, some like shade.

Very Happy that could work, thanks for the tip.
I know they usually love full sun but shouldn't do too bad in that spot either and there are indeed some very nice
looking varieties. I have to see what is available though, maybe I'll take another trip to the garden center tomorrow.

When looking up ground covering plants for shady spots I just came across this:
Quote:
Tot de bodembedekkers die met minder zon genoegen nemen, behoort het bekende maartse viooltje (viola odorata)
which translates to saying that viola odorata is a ground covering plant that does well in less sunny spots.
I am pretty sure that's the one I put in there Razz
This is how it looked when I just got it so you can see how well it has been growing.

I took another trip to the garden center today and got some more plants. I did get some ground covering plants but no sedum.
(they had some but I didn't really like it). I did make a list beforehand with some plants I liked which I got mostly from this
very useful page. So, what did I get ?
- Aubrieta ' Blue Emperor' (rock cress).
a trailing plant which produces a lot of light purple flowers that apparently are loved by bees.
- Leptinella potentillina (brass buttons).
a plant with lots of small fern like leaves that has tiny yellow flowers.

I also got a very nice looking Pulmonaria (longwort) plant which I wanted to put in the container with the Solanum dulcamara.
And a fuchsia. no idea why I got that, I mean I like it but it hadn't crossed my mind before to get one. When I thought I had
enough plants something purple caught my eye. It's a Gynura aurantiaca also know as 'purple passion' or velvet plant.
The leaves are purple on the bottom and green on top and they are covered with purple fuzzy hairs. Apparently the flowers
smell horrible and it has a lot of flower buds so I am curious how bad it's going to be.

Something I started on last year is an Alice on Wonderland croquet set, which in the story is played with flamingoes and hedgehogs.
I already have an old croquet set and I was thinking of using the mallets as plants supports. However they would be top heavy and
I'd have to sharpen them at one end to insert them in the ground. So I am not sure if that would work well. I don't really know yet
what would be the best way to paint them. I do have an idea of the design but I am not an experienced painter and it is bit tricky
with a cylindrical shape. Maybe I can cut a template from a toilet roll.

I did already paint the pegs last year. I first used photoshop to get an idea of how I wanted to paint it. For the hearts I got a box with
various sizes so that was a lot easier than having to cut them out myself.

we're having some sunny days with summer temperatures and the plants are loving it sunny flower

One of the Datura Inoxias from last year is showing some signs of life. I didn't really expect it to survive the winter but
was hoping it would as they didn't flower last year. There is another one in there but that one hasn't shown any signs let.
Two of the Datura metel seeds sprouted and there are also a lot of Datura stramonium seeds sprouting in the witchgarden.
I'll let them grow a bit before I thin them out. So if it all works out I will have 3 different varieties of Daturas this year.

The Snap Dragons from last year are also doing great. I've thinned out the ones I've sown this years (Circus Clowns)
and will do that some more over time as I want to end up with only one plant per cell (that would be 12 of them).

I transplanted a couple of the Nigella seeds and sown some new ones in the empty cells (I want to end up with 6).

Ipomoea alba seeds sprouted and rather quickly. I nicked them with a file and soaked them for 24 hours in water + peroxide
but because the seeds are rather large I placed them in some wet perlite instead of a ziplock bag. They all sprouted within
12 hours after that. The Ipomoea lobata seeds also sprouted at the same rate.

Eight of the Phlox seeds have sprouted and a lot of the Papaver somniferum seeds too.

The peppers are loving the sun as well. It's nice that I can already place them outside.

Aubrieta Blue Emperor opened a flower. I was afraid I might have killed it when I transplanted it because when I tried
to divide it most of the rootball came off. But some of it has taken hold Very Happy.

The Fuchsia is doing great and producing a lot of flower buds. I am really liking the flowers on this one.

Gynura aurantiaca is flowering and they smell a bit like sweaty socks. I can imagine it would not be pleasant to have
it inside. I actually did get it for inside, but it will do much better outside for now.

The Garden of Live Flowers is also doing really well. The tiger lily is opening out like a telescope, the rose is spreading
her leaves. The violets are spreading out nicely and are producing flower buds and the daisies are flowering abundently
and add a nice splash of color at the moment.

plants keep growing on nicely so here's another update. Let's start with some poisenous plants or in other words;

"The Witch Garden"

The digitalis/foxgloves sadly hasn't survived after doing great last year so I am not going to see it flower. I did get a
new one from my parents which by the looks of it is going to produce 2 flower stalks this year. It's a lot smaller but
that's actually a good thing for my balcony. It might actually be offspring from some that I've sown years ago. They
didn't work well for me but my parents got them flowering and they self seed pretty well. I am pretty sure those had
yellow flowers so we'll see.

What I thought were Datura metal seedlings turned out to be Nicandra physalodes. I have no clue how those seeds
got in there as I used new seed starting mix for those. However another seed sprouted and I am pretty sure that this
is indeed a Datura, I'll know for sure when it has grown a bit.

There are still Datura stramonium seedling popping up in the main container together with some Morning glories
and Nicandra physalodes. I removed all the morning glories and all but one of the Nicandra physalodes. I might
remove that one too as they get so large. On the other hand it is a nightshade and I should have at least one
in my collection.

Speaking of large nightshades the Solanum dulcamara has almost reached the top, that is the balcony above me,
and it's only just the beginning of may. So I will have to do some pruning sooner or later but it's nice to see it grow so
vigorously, especially considering the container it's in isn't that large (and it's sharing it with the Pulmonaria).

Snap dragons are doing great and I thinned out the ones I've sown this year ("Circus Clowns") even further. What I find
interesting is that most of them have sets of 2 leaves but I have a couple that have sets of 3 leaves. Phlox are doing
good too. I might do some transplanting this weekend but I think I could leave them for a bit longer. Nigella's are starting
to produce some more foilage and one of the Numex Twilight peppers (the second seed that sprouted) is looking great Razz
3 passiflora seeds have sprouted sofar and I am starting to wonder where I will place them. I'll figure something out.
Fuchsia keeps producing lovely flowers, I like that it has some different shades. colors

and then we have the Garden Of Live Flowers. The tiger lily is going up, up, up and the violets have started producing flowers.
I think they combine really well with the daisies. The rose is doing great too. Very Happy

Solanum dulcamara is flowering and aphids seem to like it
It don't think it will stop growing anytime soon so I stretched some braided
hemp twine across my balcony for support.

Aphids also seem to like my violets, but because of the hot sun they got pretty much all cooked alive.
They did do some damage to the plants but I think they will recover.

The hot sun also burned the lupine to a crisp but it's still alive so if it doesn't get too hot in the next days it should
put out some new growth. The Lupine that sprouted from a seed is doing fine (I had expected it the other way around).

Sempervivums on the other hand are loving the sun.

Phacelia tanacetifolia is doing great too, and the fuchsia keeps producing more flowers. Razz

Because I didn't have any luck with the pepper seeds I bought this year I decided to put all the remaing ones in coffee
filters/ziplock bags to see if any of them would sprout. None of the pepper seeds sprouted but a lot of the Solanum
pseudocapsicum did. Very Happy I selected 6 of the best looking sprouts and put those in the dirt. So if all goes well that's
another nightshade for the collection. I am also starting to believe that I do indeed have an Atropa belladonna plant
now, at least judging by some photos I found online. But it's still a bit too soon to be 100% sure.

Sounds like you need ladybugs to kill aphids Smile

Some ant species "farm" aphids for their sugar production!

digitalis/foxgloves is flowering. It's small but pretty love

Lupine didn't make it afterall although I still have the one that sprouted from seed. So I put what I hope is the Atropa belladonna
in it's place. It's actually looking more like henbane now though, which I would be happy with too.

Solanum dulcamara is getting berries and still producing flowers which are popular with bumblebees.
Phacelia tanacetifolia is flowering too.

I didn't have any luck with the Ipomoea alba (morning glory with large white flowers) Sad The seeds sprouted but then rotted away
in the ground. I've put the remaining seeds in the ground but I think they just rotted away too. Sadly the seeds are no longer available
else I would just order some new ones as they could still be sown at this time.

First Datura stramonium is flowering and there are a lot more that also have flowerbuds Very Happy The Datura inoxia isn't doing a lot,
it's definitely alive but not really growing and it's not getting a lot of sun now as the other ones are covering it. Datura metel
(purple) is still in a small seperate pot and although it would do better if I transplant it into the container it would get less sun
that way. So I will wait untill it has gotten a bit larger.

The first snapdragon has also started to flower and the lupine started flowering as well.

The Tiger lily has a lot of flowerbuds (a lot more than I was expecting) and is about 1m in height now Shocked I was a bit worried
about the white fluffy stuff but apparently that is just something some lilies do. I am really looking forward to this one flowering.
Another one I am looking forward to is of course the rose which also has some small flowerbuds, already revealing some of the red color.

Papaver somniferum is growing pretty well too. I should probably thin it out a bit but they give eachother support and I don't mind
if they stay a bit smaller if it means I get more flowers.

Digitalis has opened some more flowers Very Happy

Peppers are doing good too btw. They aren't growing very fast yet but do look healthy (will take some photos at some point).
