Chat room? Subject description: Where is everybody |
|
|
I was in the chat room last night when doing my stream test.
No one there.
I was just there again helping Ron with his.
No one there.
Are we using a different chat room for this stuff now, or is everybody just busy? |

Update - we'll be live after all |
|
|
I'm happy to say that we will indeed be playing live tomorrow after all.
We're all pumped and looking forward to an awesome musical journey.
We will test the stream Friday night around 8-9 PM EST
All the best,

Great - I'll log on as early as I can to do the test. I have BUTT all set up with the server info, just need to patch it all together at our studio space.
Cheers! _________________ Reality is Subjective |

Eurorack modular, plus the Wasp.
Notes from the bells (plus the main clock) came from the Dunno.

Subject description: Acoustic Interloper set |
|
|
Here's my contribution to the cause. It starts out with a low D and the A below that on a Kemble upright piano (made in London), looped throughout the piece. If you listen closely when there is nothing else playing, you can hear two attacks: one from the string, and another a few seconds later when the wood starts to resonate. I never realized that until I recorded this sample. The wood gives a second, delayed note, richer in overtones than the string.
During the first 4 minutes I played a melody written by Jeremy Parson in 2011, as noted in a post above, using a two-finger picking technique (double thumbing) on an acoustic, open-back Bart Reiter "Professional" model banjo with a Bacon tone ring and a wooden resonator. I also used a bass line track that I recorded using a Martin acoustic bass guitar. These and several patches were run through a Max/MSP reverb in Ableton Live.
After 4 minutes the piece segues into an arpeggiated section # 2 using Applied Acoustic Systems (AAS) StringStudio and Chromaphone soft synths, with the arpeggio pattern matching my 3-finger banjo-picking adaptation of the Brazilian Baion rhythm pattern. Turning on StringStudio glissando with large intervalic leaps in the final 3rd of this section gives the percussive snaps & tabla-like detunings.
At around 18 minutes I restarted a recording of the first part as a Live recording, then time stretched it to sound like plunked resonant machinery. I ran the two piano loops through some Live granular delays with auto-random controls on pitch and delay (the swooshing sounds), tossed in some ebow on the Nechville Universal Meteor electronic banjo, tossed in some zero-input mixer using the Galaxy AXS10 (the red one) and the Yamaha MG124cx mixers, no effects, with the signals driven at times into percussive saturation. Altogether there are 3 granular sounds: the time-stretched acoustic banjo recording, the granular delays on the piano loops, and the mixers driven into percussive saturation.
I ended up playing the Nechville Universal Meteor electronic banjo with the notes doubled up, an octave down, via the Roland GR-33 guitar synth's "guitarron bass" patch driven by the Nechville's data output.
I really like the bluesy riff I stumbled into during the last 2 minutes!
Thanks to PHOBoS and Jan for running this, and for everyone who played and listened.
Edit: Fixed a speller.

Here is my set from today along with a pic of my setup. The introduction for the first few minutes were pre-recorded. The rest was live and improvised (well the sequence notes were punched in beforehand on the modular). Hope you like it and thanks again for making this happen.

I enjoyed this a lot! Cool drones and stuff, and then during the middle-ish section, I forgot what I was listening to and thought it might be some late 60s/early 70s old-school electronics influenced by electro-acoustic / musique concrete.
