Gate sequencer to 4 BIT Shift Register to R-2R DAC for ... |
 |
|
controlling the pitch of a VCO! That's what I'm doing right now. Building 2 of them.
Here. This is what I just writ, at a FB Group devoted to Lunetta as well ...
Well - there ain't done be much discussion going on here so ... I'm going to try throwing a few more things out there to see what happens.
It's been a wondrous ride through the modular world (again) since 2005.
In June of that year, I decided that I wanted to build a modular again (as I had between 1992 to 1998), but this time - to use specifically, as a 'noise machine'.
It grew into a 'normal' on by later 2006; in addition to a new noise machine starting in 2009 and that machine itself, has morphed all over the place since. Alive and dead. Rebuilt and torn down through 4 different noise machines.
Later 2012 took me into building and then buying PCBs for Serge modules and 2014 then began the expensive 2 years of Euro module conversion.
Since 2017 I've been mainly guitar oriented but in July of this year, the urge to come back to the wonderful simplicity of a 'noise machine' as I had originally intended in 2005 has come back - strongly!
Back if only briefly (as I'm just at the verge of 'retiring DIY in the basement due to worsening arthritis'), to building again, I'm getting at least 2 x Gate Sequencers built for creating noise pieces.
I did a short test yesterday, hooking up my Delptronics Trigger Man and Ladik S-180 Gate sequencers for the first time in a few years.
(My Bastl Knit Rider had initially taken over then ... Ableton Live took over completely. I've 'woken up' again thankfully! Hahaha. Live for 'punk tunes', and real sequencers for 'noise'! )
The Gate Sequencers that I'm building will be the simple every day Baby 8 sequencers, with the ON / OFF switches per step as well as a rotary switch for the Reset Step.
The key, here for tune creation: The Gate sequencer output of those switches at each step, is sent to a 4 BIT Shift Register, who's 4 outputs are then sent to an R-2R DAC, which converts those ON / OFF signals, into a Control Voltage for a VCO!
At least 2 of those, to control all of that, LIVE?
Yeah! This, will be super fun, live noise jamming with the machine playing parts BY ITSELF as well!
More on it, as I go. _________________ https://tsol.space/crafting/composing-music/albums/ - my punk, ambient and experimental tunes |

Instead of a rotary switch for reset I can highly recommend using seperate switches per step, it's much more performance friendly.
You can also combine them with the gate switches as I did for the "Little Gate" sequencer. _________________ "My perf, it's full of holes!"

I HAD considered doing that in initial panel design and I DO have at least 16 ON / ON for now, as well as ON/OFF/ON for Play / Mute / Reset.
To cut parts down (diodes for play and reset) I left it at the ON / ON for the the layout ... I THINK. I switched immediately to building the quad 2 x inversion opamps (2x amp on 2nd) to take care of the +5V problem for +12V units as well as the quad AND Gate. (Fin. both yesterday.)
I hope to finish the 2 babys, this morning.
If I don't have the ON / ON laid out permanent, I can switch back.
I'll check yours out. _________________ https://tsol.space/crafting/composing-music/albums/ - my punk, ambient and experimental tunes |

Oh ho ho! Thank you for posting the huge writeup about those problems that you solved, as well as showing me how to do only 1 set of diodes for the Play AND Mute modes. Duh on my part!
Switching to your setup, mostly, for my 2 today! _________________ https://tsol.space/crafting/composing-music/albums/ - my punk, ambient and experimental tunes |
