I notice that the packaging for SMT is generally a reel type looking thing, maybe a bit like old camera film, but with sprocket holes only on one side.

Q, Is pin 1 always facing the sprocket holes? I ask because I bought some SMT TL-071s recently that didn't indicate anywhere where pin 1 was. Turns out it faced the sprocket holes; I found this out by trial and error.

Then I looked at the other SMD parts I had in my junk box, and it seemed to be the same thing, all the PIN1's faced the direction of the sprocket holes.

But I don't have that many SMT parts, so maybe this is "sampling error" not the audio kind?

Does anyone know?

Sometimes SMD ICs have no marking at all for pin 1, and instead, the side that pin 1 is on has a bevel on it. Google "SMD pin 1" for more.

SMD is not DIY friendly, the way that through-hole is.

Thanks Grumble, that seems to bear out what I have seen.
