This building block creates a fuzzy distortion that is like a TubeScreamer.

Just copy the coloured modules into your own patch, most probably the FX area.

How it works:

It has a compressing nonlinear gain cell at its heart, the 'inner loop'. This gain cell is placed in a feedback loop of a mixer to intensify the nonlinearity, the 'outer loop'.
The compressive effect has a similarity to a studio audio compressor: it takes a little while before the compressing takes effect. This will compress a fast rising slope in a waveform less than a slowly rising or falling slope. This effect is intensified by an allpass filter in the outer loop, but also an allpass filter in the gain cell feedback loop that creates the even harmonics. The allpass delays will cause the slightly delayed compressive action to produce bright spikes in a sound. But note that these spikes are actually built up by creation of harmonics and not by a waveform waveshaping function.

Like it is tweaked now I personally like it the most. So, only the DEPTH knob is there to tweak. But you could experiment yourself with the allpass frequencies.

Btw, I think this a good example of what I mean with ACE technology (= Analog Circuitry Emulation). It does not emulate analog components one to one, but it tries to capture characteristics of analog circuitry in a new digital format. In this case the compressive effect of Germanium diodes or a cheap OTA-based VCA.

Good this ACE initiative !

I'm now trying the screamer on some pulsed and scratched tone-noise - might add just the bit of "twang" I need :-)

Jan.
