Just a bit of fun

Had a look at the Buchla Easel programming guide and did some research on AH and SynthDIY. This should run on the G2 demo but is not a complete Easel model.
I left out the reverb as that isn’t included in the Demo software. Also the easel’s uniqueness comes from its overall design and cant be replaced in software.

The modulation osc can track the keyboard and be routed to the 2nd gate (which is a combination low pass filter/vca).

The complex oscillator starts with a triangle then creates a sine, square and narrow pulse. The square is derived from a standard comparator, the pulse uses a fixed high pass filter on the square to give a wave with narrow pulses where the square edges are. The Sine is then further modified by a wavewrap module. There are varying ideas on how this was implemented on the easel, some say non linear wave shaping, others say FM but looking at the actual wave samples, the G2 wave wrapper comes pretty close. Finally, a xfade allows mixing between the timbre modified sine and the other selected wave.

The signal then goes through Gate 1 and optionally gate 2. The original has a signal inversion inline with one of the 2nd gate input to allow pseudo high pass effects. Not implemented in this version. Also not implemented is the sequencer and pulser oscillator. My implimentation of the low pass gate could also be improved.

Only 3 variations filled, tweak it yourself.

Surprise, something was changed in 1.4 :-)

On loading the patch my first reaction was like "is that all", but I've read a bit in the manual as well (after a link was posted somewhere on this forum). It seems well thought out and or a simple system there are a lot of possibilities. Things like the self trigger on the envelope really add something to it that another simple synth usually won't have.

BTW, the easel's manual is here : http://www.wavemakers-synth.com/buchla/PaMtEO.pdf

And the thread where this was mentioned is : http://electro-music.com/forum/topic-10024-25.html

this is a fun little patch... like you said, jan, deceiving in it's seeming simplicity, at first, but it has a unique sound and architecture that i enjoyed tweaking and mutating.

Jan, have you tried to emulate a Vactrol-like slew in the G2 at all? Shocked Very Happy

It does remind me of the sound of a Bucha synth of those early 70s. I've waited quite a while and listened several times before mentioning that because its just a very subjective opinion based on ancient memories.

This patch needs to be completed by bringing out the controls and morphs to the front panel. The Music Easel was intended for live performance. The knobs are key. I wish I had time to do it myself.

Here we go, MKII has panel assignments for the non Demo users.
Also worked a bit harder on the low pass gate which behaves like how it is described, including the quasi-high pass function. Also implemented the reverb, pulser and sequencer section (please don't use more than 5 steps) Still runs in the Demo, on my oldish PC anyway.

Have provided some hard wired patching through mixers but you can of cause repatch yourself.

I have got to get a computer made in this millenium!

Not having tried the patch yet (don't know if you've already tried it) but I recall Grant Richter talking on the SDIY list about emulating the response of the VTL5C3 with a voltage controlled slew.

It basically multed the output of the slew back into the CV input of the slew. Can't remember if it was inverted before it went back to the CV input of the slew or not (great, now my brain hurts) Very Happy

If it's of any interest, the response curves of the VTL5C3 can be seen in the data sheet:

http://optoelectronics.perkinelmer.com/content/Datasheets/vtl5c3_c4.pdf

Hmmm - probably wasn't inverted.

Cheers,
Scott

Thanks Scott

This patch doesn't attempt to model vactrols at all Embarassed .
I seem to be able to get quite close to those VTL5C3 curves using feedback that changes sign with the input square wave. The G2 doesn't have a VC slew but the 1pole lowpass makes an OK substitute.

Thanks for the tip.

Took the liberty of mapping the sequencer controls to pages B2 and B3. Of course I used all 16 stages. Why not?

Added a control to page B1 to control the length of the sequencer. Why not?

nice going! those additions are great and the knob control makes this immediately more playable.

Sorry Howard, I forgot to use a smiley when suggesting not to use more than 5 stages. Just a reference to the easel only having a 5 step sequencer.
I never use the G2 assignable knobs myself.

I notice that you rarely assign knobs. Why is that. Do you have an engine or something?

I'm in the minority that does not like the G2 UI. I don't like the paged system, the specific way parameters are named, the feel of the knobs (except volume, that is nice), the LED circle annoys me because it doesn't quite track properly.
Tweaking in the editor may not be ideal but to me it wins simply because I can see all the knobs/switchs/cords at the same time.

there is a 303 patch i did in the past that has something like it...
fast attack and slow release but building up when having multiple triggers in a short time.

I am not sure if this is the wright patch...

Wow. Beautiful, complex simple synth. Some of my favorite sounds from the G2 demo so far.

Haven't tried this patch, but after seeing this video, can you guess what the next thing I will be doing? Wink
