Hi there.

I've just completed my first performance using randomly generated notes (attached here: http://electro-music.com/forum/post-80748.html#80748). I think it's fairly good, but there is something bothering me... In the performance, Slot B (pad sound), sometimes two consequecutive notes are the same, ie. two consecutive random values are close enough to be quantised to the same note. How can I avoid this? Anyone know?

I’ve pondered that question once or twice. This is one solution I thought of.
The green block gives a logic high only when both levels are the same. This logic signal offsets one of the levels to whatever interval you want in place of unison.

Thanks Ian.

I've looked at your patch and I think it's a way of ensuring notes in a chord are not the same. That's good, but I was actually after a way to ensure that two consecutive (mono) notes are not the same. I was thinking of using a sample and hold module with a delay and something silmilar to your compare circuit, but I couldn't work out how to patch it up. I'll have another look to see if I can modify your patch to do it. In the meantime, if anyone has already worked this out, I'd appreciate a fix patch.

<<Edited>> Just had a go... it didn't really work, but I've found another problem with my idea. To delay the signal to the S&H module, I need to use an audio delay which then upgrades the signal to audio level which makes it a bit DSP hungry. Any ideas anyone? I don't suppose there is a module that will take a reading of an input on receiving a clock pulse and output it at the next clock pulse is there?

No, but when you cascade two s&h's and trigger one with a logic signal and another one with an inverted version of that signal you'd have something like it. Or maybe the SR32 / DlyClock module when set to two ... (from the delay tab)

BTW, to delay a logic signal you can use a logic delay module (from the yellow tab)

Thanks Jan,

I'll try the cascading S&H modules idea.

Yeah, but to delay a control signal (note number), you need to use an audio delay don't you?

My idea doesn't work for serial note streams because if you get 3 consecutive identical notes, the second two will still be the same. Also, the interval you modify the note by could statistically be the next random value. see attached patch.

An alternative would be just to use 2 KeyQuant modules with mutually exclusive note selections and toggle between them on consecutive notes.

see second attachment.

I found that... got stuck there. Thanks for your excellent (and simple) solution. Since I found out Metamorphosis.prf won't work on unexpanded, I've gone back and added some more bits and pieces - I'll have to see if I can include this... I think I've only got about 1% spare in the relevant slot, but I'll see if I can squeeze it in. Very Happy
