Hi,

I'm having some issues with programming a professional-sounding open hi hat.
So I wanted to ask you this: What is the "theory" behind programming one that sounds like a typical trance/techno hat?

The thing I already know is that it can be created by simply using white noise and shaping it with an envelope generator. Although this does produce a decent sounding "closed" hi hat, it's not very helpful when trying to create the "open" version. I'm sure it's more complicated...

I attached a .wav sample of what I would like it to sound like, and I also attached a patch of what I have so far...

I would appreciate any pointers.

I don't generally program sounds like this, but it sounds like this would be a good case for some kind of formant filtering. You can make that up with a few bandpass filters in parallel. Also, you are doing the volume envelope and the the filter envelope together. I would suggest putting the output from the filter through the reverb module (maybe some other processing) and then run that through a VCA/EG.

Hi there.

Basically, hat sounds are made up from extremely complex patterns of enharmonic partials... which can reasonably be recreated using FM. In particular, by using pairs of oscillators, using one square wave to frequency modulate another square wave (preferably not with a 50% duty cycle, ie. pulse waves). Then simply shape and filter to taste. Very Happy Distortion can also help.

More detailed information can be found here:

If you like, you are most welcome to use the hi hat and other drum sounds that I programmed which can be found here:

Its very much a matter of taste, but on the G2 I personally like to use the MetNoise module instead of the Noise module for most cymbal-type sounds.

When the Freq input is modulated with a random signal, but the input knob is opened just one tick, the sound of the MetNoise module gets very lively.
Some distortion like with the ShpStatic module can give the MetNoise module some extra grittiness.
It is often a good idea to use a separate Env module for the sound of the hit of the stick on the hat and another one for the sound of the hat itself after the hit.
