I speculate you need a dedicated partition for the Linux installation. If you have only one drive in the PC and it's already got only one partition with XP installed, I think you are in trouble. There are some third party programs that allow you to split partitions and not destory the data, but I'm not sure about any feeware stuff. Maybe somebody else knows.

Anyhow, if you do have a second partition, then just load the Linux install disk and it'll ask you what partition to use and it will enable you to set up a dual boot loader. I don't know which one Ubuntu uses, but there are several ones you can use with Linux.

You may like to know Seraph that if you use comments like "Read the Fucking Manual" on the Ubuntu website forum you will be removed from the list and banned immediately.

Quote:

Comments like 'STFU' or 'RTFM' or "Google it up" are NOT acceptable -- This is not limited to or excluding childish type behavior, excessive use of odd forms of communication (ie. l33t5p34k and so forth), and excessive vuglar innuendo.

I really HATE this emoticon- as it is so fucking belittling. Perhaps I have got it wrong about this list after all? Maybe I should just pull out now?

If you think you are so good at installing this sort of thing Seraph- then just go ahead and explain how to do it rather that printing all of that macho RTFM bullshit.

period.

Oh yes and FWIW, I ask these sort of questions so that others may stumble across this with the same question looking for a similar reply- as an educational angle- that is all.

Thankyou Howard. That's better.

It's quite humbling that Linux likes the idea of wiping XP off the face of the HD. This is a good move IMO.

On the Unbuntu forum there is too much traffic (not surprising)- so it's difficult to fault find unless one has all the time in the world- which right now, I don't.

OK, I agree about the RTFM and a few other emoticons we have installed on the site. I think I'll remove them, but if I remove them then something must be put up in their place. I can't go though all of the posts and remove them.

I've never removed one of these before. Hmmm...

Anyone got an "icon no longer available" icon?

How about we replace the RTFM icon with study Question

Good move Howard Very Happy

Just leave the old ones there I guess- and put those ones left down to a bygone internet era!

I'm not the kind of person to be fluffy but I think this has got to be a good move. The early days of the internet forum was a hard place to swallow- I'm pleased that more people want to move away from that agressive macho garbage. Maybe we should have some 'hugging trees' and 'putting flowers in the end of AK47's' emoticons instead?? Laughing

OK, it's now reading until something better comes up. I replaced a couple of other ones that might get people a little offended. There are probably some more in there tool.

Peace, everyone. Peace

good luck with the Linux install esp. as it relates to audio work

[btw...my 2 cents...'emoticons' are just really silly anyway..i could do without the funny computer faces....not sure about 'macho'...it's kind of...childish....isn;t it ? it's what words were invented for...to express oneself..without the use of stickmen]

Well yes, well no.

Thing is I noticed that its easy to get misunderstandings with text only. Seems to have to do with not seeing each other's faces, expressions. I'm a bit opposed as well from my heart :) See and I really was smiling when I typed that emoticon, so it could have been as if you saw a glimpse of my face, a quick smile in this case. :D

I did read Carlo's emoticons as irony, as humour. not as cynic even. Maybe the emoticons used are not very suitable, probably not when they cause that much disturbance, must say though that the disturbance was very readable, even without any emoticons used !

I read this the same way Jan did.

As for the RTFM, we all know that documentation should be read, but there is a pretty good chanche that the docs for software as well as computer hardware often are dead wrong or at best misleading. This means that slamming up a RTFM most probably also contains a fair bit of humour referring to the expected quality of any computer related documentation out there.

Ahumm.. anyone ever tried to read the original "english" manual for the Waveterm?

Just had this thought that towards people having trouble reading it's not very friendly to say things like RTFM, could have thought of that earlier .. being not toataly lysdectic free either myself ...

Try Palin, Idle or Cleese .. Monty Python and the "Spanish Inquisition" sketch.
Laughing

A reenactment could be done by Howard, you and me breaking in to the White House and giving a Linux boot loader course while delivering some very convincining torture.

Or not.. Rolling Eyes

I installed Win2k in a dual boot configuration with Red Hat & suse.
It's been a few years, but I'm pretty sure I left 8GB just for the Linux partitions or so after partitioning the HD for Win2k.

I read something recently on the Suse website about problems doing dual boot with XP.

There's tons of info in the Linux newsgroups, I got some help there when I had problems.

I think (now having some good sleep- so having time to reflect on this) that I ripped Carlo's head off because it was a complete coincidence that I happenned to be fuming about that very RTFM emoticon moments earlier.

so just misfortune I think.
