Just thought I'd share my current project. It's a sequencer based on the Seku by Mauno Tuominen (http://www.studiomanus.com/seku.htm).

The whole thing started of as an idea to build a simple gate sequencer using only CMOS. I thought that by using just 2 4017 and some logic I could get it all to work. But after some trial and error - that just resulted in failure. I gave it up.. (The basic problem was that I never got it to reset at the right step. It was either to early or to late..) ..and decided to build the Seku instead.

I'm not sure I'm gonna get it all to work. But the LEDs light up fine (except for LED 6 and 16 which I have the wrong way around..). I'm gonna try the CV portion out tomorrow, and I hope I'm able to finish the gates aswell.

Just thought I'd share some pictures on what it all looks like.

I'll try to update if I make any progress Smile

Hey that's awesome!
I looked and looked at that circuit just as I was getting back into building a couple years ago. Never did build it... Sad I'll be interested in reports from you on its status.

Thanks for sharing the pics!

I drew the artwork in Illustrator and just printed on Lazertran (http://www.lazertran.com/) with my inkjet printer.

Lazertran is a water slide decal and when you put varnish on it becomes transparent. Thought I'm not 100% satisfied with the result. It's kinda blotched. Thought it might be that I used the wrong kind of varnish. Or I messed something up - I'm not sure. I'll get it right on my next fronpanel Wink

Hopefully I'll finish the sequencer this weekend. Will post video and some bleeps and squeeks then I hope! Smile

why is it using 3 4067?
not sure how much they can drive, but it sould be enough for 2ma LEDs and as many gates and cv pots as you want. Of course that needs diode decoupling.

I don't know why he used 3. I thought I'd just follow the schematics and it would all end OK.

I guess that with diods and some transistors you could just use the outs from 1 4067 and get it to work. I'll try that next time Smile

The "top" 4067 outputs a "gate" only while the inhibit is low, the inversion of the clock on the 4520. The gate out is more like a stream of triggers, since each lasts only half a step, assuming the clock is a square wave.

The middle cv 4067 is always enabled (inhibit=gnd), as is the bottom pulse 4067. To my thinking, the pulses more resemble gates, since they last the full duration of a step. The cv mux is many inputs (the pots,) to one output, while the pulse mux is one input (+v,) to many outputs. One chip couldn't do both.

A more significant question to me is why use an inverter package (4584) and one NOR (another chip) as an inverter?

And nice work, zthee.

The good part about this is that if you instead of having the inversion of the clock pulse appear on pin 15 you tie it to ground - then you get tied notes instead of gate pulses.. So my switches are on-off-on. When up the gate is off. When in the middle it's on and when it's down the note ties.

So my artwork is wrong on the front panel. I didn't realize it until yesterday. And it's a bit to late to do something about it. But it's no big issue...
