VCA in exponential mode |
 |
|
Hi,
can anybody throw a sample which could illustrate an interesting use of VCAs in exponential mode (i.e. not LINEAR) ?
On each vca I build, I always add a switch for LIN/EXP mode but I have to admit they always stay in the upper position.
...
EXP is better for percussive sounds !?
linear adsr with exp vca, exp adsr go with linear vca...
i'm lost and (sadly) unconvinced. |

Personally, the only useful use of the expo mode in a VCA is for using MIDI velocity CV to modulate the output of an ADSR EG _________________ Yves |

I always use my VCA in log mode when connected to my ADSR. I seem to have better control that way (Yusynth ADSR to MFOS log/lin VCA).
By the way, are we mixing exp and log or are there three types of VCAs, log, lin and exp? _________________ http://www.casia.org/modular/ |

Exponential VCA are handy for tremolo and panning. Last edited by widdly on Thu Aug 05, 2010 10:19 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Wikipedia says the expo function is the inverse of the log function, so if Ray Wilsons vca's really are log (and not exp), and exponential vca'a are good for tremolo and panning, that explains why I get better tremolo out of the lin setting of my Ray Wilson vca's than with the log setting. Actually, I haven't yet found the log setting useful for anything, and pretty hard to set up interms of the cv-offset control.
This log/exp thing has had me confused too...

thank you for answering.
that's an interesting use yves...
As you coriolis i've found cv-offset control to behave strangely, anyway...not the same.
Etaoin, won't your eg sound as "thin peaks" in this mode ?
Has anyone try the EnvyLope/Papareil Linear ADSR EG ?

Yeah - I'm a bit confused too
I'm assuming that normally, lin, log and expo refer to the effect on the input signal of *any* VCA when controlled by a linear CV..... (?)
As an aside, I've seen some pan pots described as "equal power" - Mackie stuff used to mention that IIRC. Would that be log or expo or something else?
cheers,
Dave

Ray has pictures of what he calls lin and log on his VCA.
This log looks suspiciously exponential to me.
